ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Instruction & Student Learning

• Teaches assigned courses as scheduled and assumes primary responsibility for and exercises oversight of the curriculum in conjunction with the Department's policies, ensuring both the rigor of programs and the quality of instruction
• Considers individual differences of students to design and support a range of appropriate learning activities
• Participates in identifying students with academic or other needs and responds by utilizing an appropriate resource
• Uses technology in a manner appropriate to the nature and objectives of courses and programs and communicates clearly to students the expectations concerning using such technology
• Keep accurate and proper records according to the Faculty Handbook and departmental policies
• Maintains attendance records, determines and submits grades promptly and per established policies and procedures of the college, and communicates progress feedback and other relevant information to students throughout the semester
• Create and maintain accurate syllabi incorporating departmental, college, cross-college, and instructor requirements
• Participates in selecting appropriate materials to support course curriculum per the College's guidelines
• Conducts classes punctually and following the prescribed meeting schedule
• Employs and assists in designing and developing appropriate assessment techniques to measure students' performance in achieving course goals and objectives
• Be a facilitator of learning in a virtual environment.

Student Engagement & Advisement

• Creates a positive classroom atmosphere that encourages active and collaborative learning, student effort, academic challenge, student and faculty interaction, and learner support
• Maintains posted office hours per departmental policies of the College
• Uses technology to assist in communication with students
• Encourages a sense of community among students for learning inside and outside the classroom
• Refers students to appropriate student and academic support services available at the College or in the community.

Continuous Improvement

• Promotes continual improvement as part of the cycle of teaching and learning by assisting, as appropriate, in the maintenance of instructional materials and laboratory facilities; contributing, as applicable, to the development, selection, and improvement of instructional materials, laboratories, and other instructional facilities; providing guidance in the development, maintenance, and design of course description, course outlines, and syllabi; recommending modifications to the curriculum and participating in the design of new curricula
• Completes all mandatory performance evaluation measures within specified time limits and participates in all required training by the College
• Shares best practices with colleagues in formal or informal settings
• Participates in instructional, departmental, or institutional research to improve educational effectiveness
• Evaluates teaching and assessment practices to continue improving them
• Provides feedback, as appropriate, regarding the general operations of the department, division, and the College
• Participates, as appropriate, in the interviewing, selection, and orientation processes of department faculty and staff
• Provides advice and assistance to department, division, or College faculty
• Attends faculty meetings as called by the President, Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dean, or Department Chairperson; and participates, as appropriate, on departmental and divisional committees

Professional Development

• Maintains a personal portfolio for tenure and promotion review and other career-related needs
• Employs student, administrative, and self-appraisals to establish goals and objectives for professional development and participates in professional development activities
• Contributes, as appropriate, to the planning, evaluation, and/or presentation of college professional development programs
• Maintains required professional credentials, licensing, and continuing education hours as disciplinary standards dictate

Culture of Respect

• Fosters and maintains a safe environment of respect and inclusion for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community

OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Contributes to the community and/or the profession as a representative of the College
• Participates in local, statewide, or national levels in the advancement of the discipline and/or the two-year college mission
• Works a varying schedule, including nights & weekends, to meet departmental needs

*Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required.

About Columbus State Community College

Columbus State Community College has been meeting the diverse educational needs of the Central Ohio community for more than 50 years. The college is proud to be an important contributor to the growth and progress of the region and to serve as the front door to higher education in Central Ohio. From the first graduating class in 1965 through this year, 50,000 students have earned associate degrees in 50-plus technical fields and academic transfer programs. Columbus State also offers Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degree programs whose coursework fulfills the freshman and sophomore year requirements for bachelor’s degree programs offered by four-year colleges and universities throughout the state. Specific transfer agreements with more than 40 colleges and universities are in place at Columbus State, and new direct-to degree partnership programs are being developed all the time. Columbus State now has two campuses serving Central Ohio educational needs. The Columbus Campus is located on 85 acres in downtown Columbus. The 108-acre, full-service Delaware Campus welcomed its first students in 2010. Additionally, Columbus State offers classes at nine convenient regional learning centers throughout Central Ohio.
