Part-Time Assistive Technology Specialist/Instructor (Pool)


FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary Schedule: Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based upon education and credited experience. Pending any course assignment, initial placement can range as follows: Lab Course (Salary Schedule HB) - $89.20 up to $130.94 per hour. Lecture Course (Salary Schedule AJ) - $103.85 up to $151.07.

The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position. Duties and Responsibilities

1. Working collaboratively with faculty and staff in the Disability Resource Center (DRC) or Educational Access Center (EAC) and under the supervision of the Dean of Student Equity and Support Services, the Assistive Technology Specialist/Instructor will develop and coordinate the Assistive Technology Program, including:
2. Develop and implement curriculum in assistive technology as it relates to college level students in a diverse educational environment and monitor effectiveness through Student Learning Outcomes
3. Provide classroom and individual (or direct or one-to-one) instruction to students in the use of Assistive Technology software and strategies for its application to their college course(s). Software and applications include but are not limited to Dragon Professional for Individual, Kurzweil 3000, Smartpen, JAWS and Magic
4. Develop accessible course materials for assistive technology classes
5. Assess the technology needs of students and determine the appropriate assistive technology to support/meet their identified accommodations and their access to educational/course materials, including online materials
6. Maintain accurate records for students receiving services and maintain proper documentation and confidentiality of student files using online database
7. Participate in the development, implementation, and monitoring of the DRC/EAC program's student learning outcomes
8. Train and direct the work of staff, who provide classroom support in Assistive Technology classes and work with students in the Assistive Technology Lab
9. In collaboration with the District Information Technology Department, coordinate the installation and maintenance of assistive technology in DRC/EAC 's Assistive Technology Lab/Classroom and Test Proctoring Lab as well as labs or service areas across campus
10. Keep current with advancements in assistive technology and its application to students with disabilities in the areas of access, reading/writing, learning, and alternate media
11. Provide technical assistance to campus instructional and technology committees on access requirements for individuals with disabilities
12. Collaborate with the District's Accessibility Specialist about the accessibility of online content (i.e., website, forms, or course management system) for students with disabilities using Assistive Technology software
13. Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and general institutional needs. The College offers day and evening classes

Skills and Abilities:

1. Recent successful experience in teaching or preparation to teach college-level courses in Assistive Technology
2. Ability to use and develop teaching methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration, and engage students actively in learning, encouraging them to become independent, creative learners with higher-order thinking skills
3. Ability to organize and explain materials in ways appropriate to students with different abilities, levels of preparation, and cultural experiences
4. Ability to develop instructional learning outcomes and to develop methods for assessing student's achievement of these outcomes
5. Understanding and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college

Job Requirements:

• Master's degree or above, or equivalent foreign degree, in the category of disability, special education, education, psychology, educational psychology, or rehabilitation counseling AND 15-semester units of upper division or graduate study in adapted computer technology OR the equivalent (see below)
• Minimum of two years of full-time experience (or equivalent) within the last five years of working with individuals with disabilities at the middle school, high school or college level, identifying assistive technology to meet their access and/or learning needs, and providing instruction in its use
• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice both within and outside of the classroom.

a) Degree Equivalence
The employee or applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different. Equivalence is established through analysis of transcripts and coursework.

b) Academic Background Equivalence
Related to disciplines in which a Master's degree is not generally expected or available. The employee or applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units (or equivalent) of coursework in the academic field being applied for, and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:

i. a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelor's or Associate's degree, and

ii. a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by coursework required for the degree major.

c) Professional Achievement Equivalence
The employee or applicant must have completed the general education requirements for any Bachelor's or Associate's degree, and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The employee or applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that their preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.
