- Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g. workshops, division meetings, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and conveying information relative to instructional support functions.
- Coordinates assigned lab and support functions (e.g. creating group and individual work areas, developing instructional materials for students, working with tutor schedules, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring implementation of student learning.
- Maintains program related media communication (e.g. website and social media pages, etc.) for the purpose of communicating schedules, coursework and learning opportunities.
- Maintains instructional areas (e.g. computer equipment, classroom configuration, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items, providing learning materials, providing a safe learning environment, and meeting mandated requirements.
- Monitors individual and groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. lab areas, work/instructional rooms, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
- Oversees the work of student workers and tutors (e.g. lab and room clean-up, availability and distribution of materials, tutoring sessions, etc.) for the purpose of providing learning support for student workers, and ensuring improved student learning through student worker support.
- Performs a variety of academic/learning support processes (e.g. online navigation, tracking assignment completion and attendance, scheduling lab support, various reports requested by assigned instructor/administrator, tutoring, etc.) for the purpose of providing necessary assistance for individual learning.
- Prepares and maintains a wide variety of manual and electronic files and records (e.g. correspondence, inventories, summaries, notices, compliance documentation, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
- Provides instructional support (e.g. guiding students through academic/learning processes, reviewing and assessing completion of assignments, administering and proctoring tests, providing feed-back, recommending study and testing strategies, clarifying assignments, etc.) for the purpose of implementing study, testing, critical thinking, and student learning strategies for improving academic success, and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
- Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Submits orders for supplies and equipment, as directed by assigned classroom instructor for the purpose of ensuring availability of inventory.
- Responds to inquiries from a variety of people (e.g. students, instructors, administrators, etc.) for the purpose of providing necessary information for referral and solving problems.
- Submits data and informational materials (e.g. special reports to instructor of record, making presentations to various groups, providing reasonable accommodation for students based on verified disability, adhering to OSHA regulations, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the provision of necessary reporting.
Other Functions:
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment including computers and pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; communicating effectively when speaking and writing; solving problems; motivating students; maintaining currency of subject matter including new instructional software; and accommodating student levels of learning.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform either 1) basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and/or ratios, 2) algebra and/or geometry, or 3) advanced algebra, calculus and/or statistics, based on the position; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: learning lab processes; age and ability learning activities; health and safety standards; Napa Valley Community College student learning requirements; subject matter, terminology, techniques, equipment and materials used in the assigned instructional area; district policies, procedures and guidelines; and OSHA regulations.
ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Responsibility:
Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; directing other persons within a small work unit; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization's services.
Work Environment:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 60% sitting, 20% walking, and 20% standing. The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Job may require the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Experience:
- Three (3) years of job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in job-related area.

Desirable Qualifications
- Previous experience working as an Instructional Assistant;
- Familiarity with effective practices working with underprepared students;
- Experience working in an educational setting;
- Bilingual (English/Spanish);
- Familiarity or previous experience working with students to obtain skills and knowledge of academic grammar, spelling, formatting, and structuring of college essays.
