Under the direction of the Director of Public Safety, the Assistant Director of Public Safety ensures the safety and security of the campus, college property, faculty, staff, students, and members of the community who enter the college campus. This position is charged with directing the work of Campus Safety officers and other security personnel in a manner consistent with the environment of the college. The incumbent is charged with enforcing all college safety and security policies.

This position is designated as Emergency Essential, as such, as a condition of employment in this position, the incumbent will be subject to extended hours or call-in outside of regular hours as needed in order to respond to emergencies.

Essential Job Functions

• Assist with training and evaluations of public safety officers to ensure optimum performance of assigned duties
• Report all serious incidents to the Director of Public Safety in a timely manner;
• Assist the director regarding policies and procedures relevant to security, safety, fire protection, planning, etc;
• Performs inspections to determine adequacy of security, safety and fire protection in college buildings, parking lots and grounds;
• Actively manage vehicle registrations, citations, and appeals regarding campus parking management;
• Assist with, conducts and documents annual crisis response training and coordinates security and safety programs for the college community;
• Assist with the purchasing of uniforms, office supplies, cellphone, and radio purchases;
• Assist with organization of annual retreat for public safety staff;
• Assist with organizing and implementing educational programs for students;
• Responds to and reports serious incidents on campus to the director 24/7;
• Maintain, store and account for all public safety equipment (AEDS, vehicles, cameras, software systems) ;
• Report and input incident reports into the Maxient software data system;
• Manage and maintain card access system, with supervision from the Director;
• Acquire or maintain qualifications as a Title IX investigator;
• Assist in planning, coordinating and implementation of safety logistics plan for campus events such as orientation and commencement;
• Conduct educational training programs in response to safety concerns for students, staff and faculty on active shooter, emergency preparedness, shelter in place, fire safety, emergency response and evacuation procedures, etc.;
• Conduct driving tests for faculty, staff and students who request permission to drive a 15-passenger van;
• Serve on college committees as requested by the Director and Vice President for Student Life;
• Demonstrate an appreciation for and sensitivity to a diverse academic community, fostering an inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff from a variety of social, economic, cultural, ideological, racial, and ethnic backgrounds.

• Contribute to the overall success of the department by performing all other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field is preferred.
• Minimum of three years law enforcement, college/university, corporation or combined
• Valid Driver’s License Required

Knowledge and Skills

• Knowledge of security systems, procedures and enforcement codes. Demonstrates effective communication skills;
• Knowledge of security and law enforcement principles and procedures and concepts of supervision;
• Ability to work within a college environment during stressful and emotional situations with tact and diplomacy;
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing within a college environment;
• Works flexible hours and maintains on-call status;
• Demonstrates ability to remain calm and poised with a high degree of emotional security, even under provocation;
• Strong organizational, analytical planning, and problem-solving skills;
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies on campus and in the Danville community;
• Experience with developing and maintaining strong collaborative working relationships with other campus departments as well as outside agencies;
• Ability to conduct interviews to elicit or clarify information;
• Ability to investigate and follow-up on cases to bring them to a positive conclusion;
• Ability to resolve complaints and concerns with tact and diplomacy;
• Ability to cultivate positive relationships between students and the Department of Public Safety;
• Demonstrated fluency and proficiency in the use of technologies such as computer applications and mobile devices (Microsoft Office Word, etc.).
