Associate Director of Accessibility

APPOINTMENT: Full-time, Staff, Twelve (12) months
STARTING SALARY RANGE: Commensurate upon experience

Definition of Classification:
The Associate Director of Accessibility provides oversight for accessibility services that enhance the student experience with a specific focus on both the support and retention of students with disabilities in compliance with federal regulations. Ensures that students with disabilities have equal access to participate in and benefit from all curricular and co-curricular programs and services at Redlands and coordinates the accommodated testing program.
Reporting to the Director of the Office of Academic Success and Accessibility, this role is committed to providing student-centered and integrated student support, including a critical articulation with our Student Affairs division.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- With Director of Academic Success and Accessibility, serves as a liaison to the faculty and campus community on issues related to a range of disabilities, classroom and curriculum accommodations, and compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Americans with Disabilities Act, Fair Housing Act, and state and local regulations.
- Evaluates and interprets disability documentation for eligibility determination and coordinates services for students with disabilities; develops and implements policies and procedures for providing individualized accommodations and equal access for students in accordance with legal requirements.
- Implements reasonable accommodations consistent with current law; identifies best practices within the field; and maintains confidentiality of records.
- Meets individually with students to discuss current accommodations, assesses need for reevaluation of accommodations, fosters student self-advocacy, and improves communication with instructors/staff throughout their academic enrollment.
- Oversees coordination and execution of accommodations such as testing, note taking, alternative academic material formats and texts, assistive technology, and more.
- Meets with prospective students, current students, and family members to consult, review documentation, and discuss eligibility for accommodations.
- Advocates on behalf of students with faculty and staff to ensure proper facilitation of accommodations.
- Maintains close communication with campus partners (including Residence Life and Housing, Harvest Table Culinary Group, and Facilities) regarding the provision of housing and dining accommodations and campus accessibility, respectively.
- Plans and facilitates accessibility services education programs and workshops serving as a resource to campus.
- Develops and maintains accessibility program materials, website, and other technology.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of diagnostic and instructional methods and emerging technologies that help students with access and learning.
- Assists Accessibility Liaisons in other academic units to administer accommodations and emerging technologies.
- Plans and implements program assessment to ensure quality and effectiveness of services.
- Supports, with campus partners, incoming student orientation and processes.
- Serves on university committees or initiatives as assigned, and advises the Campus Assessment, Response and Education (CARE) Team in relevant cases
- Performs other relevant duties as assigned such as special projects, programs, and developmental activities, as assigned.
Qualification Guidelines
Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:
Experience/Training/Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Student Affairs, Education, Special Education, Educational Counseling/Psychology, or related fields. Master's degree preferred.
- Four years progressively responsible experience working in higher education in Student Support Services, Disability Services, or Student Life.
- Understanding of legal requirements of the American with Disability Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
- A valid California Class C CA drivers' license with a good driving record is required. A current DMV printout demonstrating a good driving record will be required prior to offer of employment.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge and understanding of the American with Disability Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
- Knowledge of applicable, federal, and state laws and regulations.
- Ability to apply legal and policy standards.
- Understanding of the crucial role academic support services play in higher education with respect to increasing student access, engagement, and success.
- Knowledge of the national conversation related to student academic support.
- Knowledge of theories of learning and human development.
- Promotes and knowledgeable of evidence-based practices within the areas that fall under the Academic Resource Center
- Excellent oral, and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills in handling, directing, and prioritizing multiple and complex assignments/projects and maintaining records.
- Effective supervisory, interpersonal and leadership skills.
- Ability to work independently with little direction.
- Excellent ability to clearly communicate ideas and recommendations.
- Computer literacy and proficiency on Microsoft Office and various data compilation programs such as Excel.
- Commitment to students and possess well-developed motivational skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and act with professionalism, sensitivity, and neutrality.
- Ability to use appropriate judgment when making decisions and recommendations.
- Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
Working Conditions:
Standard office and field setting. Duties performed are primarily in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort. Must be willing and able to travel (domestic and international) and to work non-traditional hours including nights and weekends, as required.
Physical Demands:
Incumbents regularly sit for long periods; walk short distances on a regular basis; travel to various locations to attend meetings and conduct work; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines; reach with hands and arms; stoop or kneel or crouch to file; speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; and lift, carry and/or move objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
