Department: Student Office for Accessibility Resources
Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Director of the Student Office for Accessibility Resources, the Department Assistant is responsible for administrative support of the office and assisting with tests/exams for students with documented disabilities.
This is a temporary position that will end in May.
Answers phone calls and routes student and faculty disability related questions to the appropriate SOAR staff member. Communicates with students, parents and university personnel. Operates under principles of confidentiality and practices within the guidelines and laws governing confidential information. Greets clients and maintains appropriate waiting area atmosphere, balancing needs for privacy, confidentiality, and sensitivity. Schedules client and administrative appointments for SOAR staff members. Assists new clients with navigating the SOAR student dashboard. Takes responsibility for daily operations of the office. Arranges purchases of office supplies and materials on hand. Produces letters, memos and reports using the computer. Makes copies. Opens, sorts and distributes mail for the office. Prepares travel requests, vouchers, purchase orders, and work orders. Sends/receives faxes as needed.
Accommodated Test Proctoring
Assists with proctoring exams and associated paperwork. Greets students and confirms the test details. This will include test security requirements: cell phones and belongings are placed in the appropriate space, smart watches are removed, pencil pouches are empty, and confirming that the student does not have any notes or other materials in their pockets or on their person. Monitors start and stop time of exams and ensures students do not go beyond the time allotted by their professor. Actively assists with proctoring exams. Coordinates return of tests to faculty, per their instructions.
Accessible Textbooks and Documents
As needed, scans textbooks and other materials in a timely manner and according to established procedure for students needing books in alternate format. Assists with document remediation Assists the Director with researching, ordering and preparing textbooks in alternate format each semester. Tracks and catalogs requests for alternate format texts from repositories or publishers.
Transports students on accessible golf cart. Attends applicable trainings. Completes performance review process with supervisor to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department, university goals and The Furman Advantage. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of the Student Office for Accessibility Resources in support of the goals and objectives of the Division of Student Life. Associates degree preferred.
At least one-year's work experience in a related area.
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to multi-task and consistently meet deadlines while handling information confidentially.
Professional, team-oriented individual with a positive attitude.
Strong knowledge of assistive technology, Microsoft Office Suite and willingness to embrace, utilize and master new technology.
Ability to positively interact with diverse groups of students, parents, faculty, and staff.
Flexible with scheduled work hours (typical hours are 8:00A- 4:30P, Monday-Friday)
Work is performed under usual office conditions.
