DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC Controller provides strategic leadership and support of systemwide financial functions including corporate accounting, federal and extramural costing policy, benefits accounting, endowment and investment accounting, payroll policy and compliance and taxation. We deliver efficient and effective financial services, provide best practices and guidance to our campus and medical center communities, develop and administer systemwide policies and procedures, and ensure the University's financial systems are compliant with all University, State, and Federal laws, rules, and regulations. Financial Reporting with the Controller's Office is responsible for external and internal reporting for interim and year-end for the University of California, University of California Retirement System, and University of California Retiree Health Benefits Trust, performing technical accounting research and providing accounting guidance, coordinating various external audits and attestation services, ensuring the integrity of financial systems and reporting, working on major system innovations and coordinating programming efforts to create, improve and streamline accounting and reporting applications. The Investments and General Accounting team manages the accounting for the University of California investment portfolio of over 13,000 funds and $200 billion.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Investments and General Accounting Manager, the UC Controller Intern will support the Investments and General Accounting team in projects related to data organization and analysis for investment, cash, and accounting transactions, and help the UC Controller department to advance organizational effectiveness through identification of issues and inefficiencies to assist in one of several business process redesigns. Will work closely with accounting and other business functions to gain understanding of the department's operations and provide recommendations for enhancing communication and work strategies.

This is a full-time summer internship position, with a flexible start and end date. Responsibilities:

60% Operational Support

Assist with the investment and general accounting operations for the Investments and General Accounting (IGA) Department. Working closely with the IGA manager and staff, supporting the collection and organization of financial data to assist accounting team in posting transactions to the UCOP accounting ledger. Review monthly cash and investment entries, learn process of organizing and reviewing data, and collaborate in preparation, posting and communication of journal entries.

30% Process Improvement Support

Attend training related to the UC accounting system and chart of accounts, work with IGA team to develop and implement projects to enhance efficiency and reduce waste. Participate in projects related to data analysis (e.g. transaction analytics, information organization and design, development of templates, etc.) to help identify trends and root causes of process inefficiencies. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement solutions, including preparation and presentations to stakeholders within UC Controller.

10% Other

Meet and interview with UC Controller staff inside and outside the Investments and General Accounting department (including Benefits Accounting, Financial Systems Support, Operational Excellence, Budget Planning and Analysis), training on the UC Controller structure, processes, and accounting systems, exploration of new and expanded uses of technology for communications, presentation tools and process improvement.

Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled student at the University of California

• Ability to communicate technical information to personnel at various levels in the organization
  
• Demonstrate interest in learning in an enterprise environment
  
• Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy
  
• Ability to be flexible and adaptable as priorities evolve
  
• Study/Major related to Finance/Economics/Accounting (Preferred)
  
• Microsoft Excel spreadsheets - experience or interest in learning (Preferred)
  

Education
