Position Summary:

The Director of Grants and Sponsored Programs will lead the College's grants operation, which provides funding that drives innovation, advances strategic priorities, and impacts programs and initiatives college-wide. A collaborative and strategic leader, the Director of Grants and Sponsored Programs works closely with faculty and staff to couple educational activities and strategic priorities with government agency and foundation interests, effectively communicating educational, experiential, financial, and human resource aspects of HCCC programs.

The Director of Grants and Sponsored Programs will plan, implement, evaluate and champion grant-related fundraising efforts that identify, cultivate, solicit and steward government and corporate agencies and foundations to obtain funds for institutional priorities at Hudson County Community College.

Reporting to the Vice President for Advancement and Communications, the Director of Grants and Sponsored Programs leads and supports several full-time direct reports and works closely with the College’s Business Office to ensure effective management and compliance of grant funds.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

Grant Writing, Grant Management, and Fundraising

· Plans, researches, cultivates, develops, and writes proposals independently and collaboratively with the grants team and faculty and staff.

· Develops, facilitates, cultivates, and stewards government and corporate agencies and private foundation relationships to maximize the opportunities for gifts and other resources, including strategies for partnering with funders and outside organizations to leverage financial resources and/or institutional reputation.

· Synthesizes abstract and lengthy RFPs into two-page summaries that call the reader to action.

· Creates all federal and state grant development and submissions in accordance with HCCC’s grants development and management standards, processes, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance.

· Supports the development and submission of legislative requests (e.g., state or federal earmarks) under the direction of the President and Cabinet.

Responsible for pre-award administration of federal, state, and private grants.

· Supports the development and implementation of the Comprehensive Local Needs Assessment (CLNA), including identifying local workforce and student needs. Assists in creating evidence-based strategies to address these needs and ensures alignment of those strategies with the Perkins V budget. Collaborates with stakeholders to ensure compliance with federal requirements and to promote equitable access and student success in career and technical education (CTE) programs.

Strategic Planning

· Develops Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and recommends strategies to guide proposal processes from start to finish.

· Develops and implements plans for achieving projected dollar goals for high-priority areas of the College each year in collaboration with the Vice President for Advancement and Communications.

· Provides monthly and quarterly regular reports and other dashboards that communicate grant activities, fiscal year accomplishments aligned with strategic goals, and the current status of grant-funded projects to the Vice President for Advancement and Communications.

· Identifies, researches, and proactively pursues grant opportunities and prospects that match the priorities and interests of the College’s strategic priorities and programs.

· Collaborates with Advancement staff within CRM database to build a body of research relevant to business and corporate relationships, primary contacts, and top prospects, among others, to enable better communications and outreach to these key contacts.

Team Management and Leadership

· Coordinates and manages meetings between and among HCCC leadership with external philanthropic leaders/partners where appropriate.

· Plays a leadership role in promoting and providing direction, training (in-person and virtual) and expanding the number of faculty and staff initiating and collaborating on the development, writing, and submission or resubmission of successful proposals and progress reports.

· Serves on internal committees and attends meetings and represents the College externally on collaborative grant development projects when requested.

Key Competencies

· Maintains a best practice-level understanding of local, state, and national trends and statistics related to HCCC’s strategic priorities and points of pride.

Performs research and maintains and analyzes background data on current and prospective grantors from various information sources including in-house records, publications, directories, online databases, and individuals.

· Effectively manages time and resources to respond to emerging needs while continuing to deliver on organizational goals, objectives, and timelines while juggling multiple priorities and competing deadlines.

Qualifications

· Bachelor's degree required; Master’s degree preferred.

· Management experience preferred.

· A minimum of 5 years of full-time city, state, and federal grants experience or equivalent nonprofit sector business development, corporate outreach, or public relations experience.

· Excellent analytical and organizational skills along with financial and data management skills including accuracy and attention to detail.

· Proven effective written and verbal communication skills, including ability to conceive, develop, write and manage proposals that result in action.

· Team-oriented, self-directed, and able to effectively manage priorities and projects with a thoughtful approach to problem-solving.

· Ability to work with a broad variety of individuals and teams, including faculty, administrators, staff, and external partners with a high degree of tact, professionalism, and confidentiality.

· Demonstrable ability to take initiative, exercise judgment, prioritize, manage multiple complex projects/assignments, and set/meet deadlines with an orientation toward results.

· High standards, integrity, adaptability, and comfort working in and thriving in a fast-paced, sometimes ambiguous environment.

· Superb administrative skills. Near-expert-level facility with Microsoft 365, including the ability to create PowerPoint presentations and slide decks.

· ?Proficient in the routine and recent use of Salesforce and Blackbaud fundraising platforms, along with prospect research tools such as DonorSearch, Candid (formerly GuideStar/Foundation Center), and others.
