The Urban and Regional Planning Program at the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning is seeking a practice track faculty member at the rank of adjunct practice instructor. We are looking for someone with significant professional and scholarly experience in real estate to teach the graduate-level course URP 390: URP 390 Real Estate Design and Development Fundamentals in the fall 2026 semester (August 25 - December 31). The course examines the mechanisms through which real estate is developed in the United States. The course addresses the following topics:

• Development fundamentals - theoretical and historical analysis of how markets interact with regulatory systems such as zoning, land use regulations, building codes, tax codes, and government approval processes
• Evaluating economic feasibility - analysis of developers' financial analysis and decision-making process as proposals interact with lenders, governmental agencies, and other stakeholders in the development process.
• Structuring developments: training in how to evaluate risk, structure financing, understand incentives for spurring development as well as social and environmental goals.  
   

The duties of the position will include the following activities: leading/co-leading syllabus design and instruction, meeting with individual students to provide feedback over the course of the semester, grading, and arranging any site visits and guest speakers. The expected effort for the appointment is 25% (or 12.5% if co-instructors are selected). Provide service to the program (consulting, committees, etc.) commensurate with teaching effort percentage and participate in the ongoing intellectual development of the real estate curriculum.

The Urban and Regional Planning (URP) Program in the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan prepares graduate students for careers in urban technology, urban planning, and real estate professionals, to shape the human and physical environments of cities and regions. The program's mission is to build knowledge, develop capabilities, and imagine possibilities to cultivate flourishing communities.

• Teach one course per year (currently fall semester, in-person in Ann Arbor) 
• Engage in ongoing, paid professional real estate work outside of the University of Michigan and incorporate real-world experience into the delivery of the course
• Provide service to the program (consulting, committees, etc.) commensurate with teaching effort percentage and participate in the ongoing intellectual development of the real estate curriculum
  

•  Degree in real estate, urban and regional planning, or an equivalent degree from a related discipline
•  8+ years of demonstrated and recognized professional ongoing work experience in real estate
  

Please note: The salary for this position is distributed from September-December. Relocation assistance is not provided for this position.
