Career Specialist, Career & Professional Development

The Mount is seeking an innovative and entrepreneurial professional for a newly created role that integrates career education and employer relations. Reporting to the Executive Director for Career and Professional Development, the career specialist is responsible for developing and implementing programs, partnerships, and initiatives that teach students the life-long continuous process of development and foster meaningful connections with industry and alumni within assigned areas of industry focus. The career specialist will serve as a direct liaison to traditional undergraduate students, faculty, and staff and collaboratively cultivate relationships with companies, organizations, and alumni in fields aligned with their assigned academic programs. They will provide career coaching to support students in discovering career pathways, articulate their career-ready skills, and build a community that propels their career aspirations. This role empowers students to use their agency to make educated decisions as they reflect on their talents and explore the ever-changing landscape of careers through innovative and strategic connections.

They will also be expected to stay up-to-date on trends in the job market and to provide up-to-date information on career pathways in their assigned academic programs. The career specialist serves as a part of the Career and Professional Development team, as well as a member of a student advisement team to support student success throughout their undergraduate career. The career specialist will collaborate closely with the Coordinator of campus recruiting programs and operations. The ideal candidate for this position will be knowledgeable about employer engagement tools/strategies and the Handshake career management system.

Work Location: Doheny Campus (Downtown Los Angeles) and Chalon Campus (West Los Angeles). Hybrid schedule available.

Annual Salary Range: $68,640.00 - $75,000.00

Monthly Salary Range: $5,720.00 - $6,250.00

Hiring salary can be above the posted pay range if candidate's qualifications are determined to be above the minimum requirements of the position description.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Career Education

• Provides culturally-responsive career coaching to traditional undergraduate students and recent alumni interested in assigned academic departments.
• Guides students through career exploration, self-assessment, goal setting, and internship/job search strategies.
• Stays informed on industry-specific labor market trends, recruiting practices, and career resources to offer tailored strategies and techniques.
• Creates and updates career education content (worksheets, videos, Canvas modules, website, etc.).
• Develops and delivers workshops, events, and presentations that equip students with the skills and knowledge needed for career success.

2. Campus Engagement

• Develops and strengthens relationships with staff, faculty and stakeholders related to assigned academic departments to develop best practices for career readiness and career exploration for students.
• Collaborates with departments and offices across campus to create programming and resources tailored to students pursuing assigned academic degrees.
• Develops and regularly shares an industry newsletter focused on trends, insights, and opportunities in fields aligned with assigned industry focus.

3. Employer & External Relations

• Builds and manages relationships with employers in assigned industries, as well as alumni and volunteers.
• Develops strategic initiatives to connect students with external partners for networking, recruiting, and professional development.
• In concert with team of career specialists, organizing employer events, maintaining key data for decision-making, and enhancing engagement strategies. Oversee a portfolio of employer engagement programming, including full-cycle event coordination and marketing campaigns, that give students the opportunity to build relevant skills and connect with employers (e.g. externships, themed weeks, networking nights, and other related programs).

4. Internship/Fieldwork Development and Coordination

• Develops and promotes undergraduate internship/fieldwork opportunities applicable for a wide range of majors/academic programs
• Serves as the liaison between the internship site and the university
• Provide consultation to academic colleagues seeking information and guidance related to for-credit/non-credit internships/fieldwork; may have the opportunity to co-teach an internship course

5.Teamwork and Collaboration

• Serves as member of an integrated student advisement team.
• Plays an active role in the successful implementation of signature CPD initiatives (i.e. career fairs) led by the Coordinator of campus recruiting programs and operations.
• Fully participates and contributes to team meetings, assigned university committees and represent CPD in external-facing university events/initiatives.
• Regularly connects with other external-facing university staff to ensure synergy and complementary efforts.

6. Communications, Reporting and Professional Development

• Ensures accuracy of all content and communication, utilizing inclusive language, graphics and UX design across platforms/mediums
• Conducts data collection, management and reporting
• Continuously benchmark with peer institutions and remain updated on promising practices in the field of experiential learning/education, talent acquisition/development and future of work to innovate professional practices

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Understands and follow FERPA, HIPAA, Title IX and other relevant federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and uphold the highest standards of confidentiality
2. Deliver direct student engagement through individual and group presentations that are culturally relevant on topics related to pursuing career-aligned experiential learning (e.g. program information, timelines, criteria, etc.)
3. Maintains a current understanding of inclusive excellence, culture and societal issues as they impact the world of work.
4. Participates in university recruitment efforts
5. Performs other job-related duties to support the Division of Student Affairs on evenings and weekends, as assigned

Job Requirements:
Knowledge:

• Demonstrated knowledge of relationship management databases
• Knowledge of trends in internships, employment, the economy, effective interventions, technology, and industry networks
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws related to student career professional development

Abilities and Skills:

• Demonstrated ability to build and strategically enhance internal and external relationships
• Effective planning, project management, and problem-solving skills
• Exceptional interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication, presentation and pitching skills
• Deep commitment to customer service and the user experience
• Ability to show respect and sensitivity for cultural differences, work/interact with a variety of internal and external constituents
• High proficiency in Microsoft Office suite with demonstrated in-depth experience using LinkedIn and other professional social networking sites
• Strong organization and planning skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities

Education:

• Minimum: Bachelor's degree in higher education/student affairs, HR or related field
• Preferred: Master's degree in higher education/student affairs, HR or related field

Experience:

• Minimum: Bachelor's degree with 3 years prior experience in higher education/student affairs, business administration, HR/recruiting/talent acquisition or related field
• Preferred: Master's degree in a relevant field with 1-2 years prior experience in higher education/student affairs, business administration, HR/recruiting/talent acquisition or related field
