Position Description

The Department of French & Italian Studies (FIS) at the University of Washington invites applications from qualified candidates for short-term, temporary instructional positions that may be needed at various points throughout the 2025-26 academic year (Sept 16-Jun 15). The successful candidate(s) would be appointed as Lecturer Part-Time Temporary, a non-tenure track, non-voting eligible faculty title. Appointments would be made on a quarterly (3-month) basis or academic year (9-month) basis as curricular needs warrant.

Instructional assignments are anticipated to be lower-division French and/or Italian language courses, but may also include other courses related to either language as needed. Generally, courses meet daily (Mon-Fri) with two hours a week of scheduled office hours. The instructional setting may be in-person or hybrid as required.

General responsibilities include:

• Effectively preparing and delivering rigorous course content that meets the academic standards befitting the University of Washington and stated learning goals for the assigned course(s)
• Ensuring that course materials and requirements are effectively communicated to students
• Coordinating regularly with the FIS Director of Language Programs, other department faculty, and FIS administration
• Using appropriate and effective teaching strategies, technologies, and student evaluation methods
• Cultivating an instructional environment that provides students with the opportunity to receive and share feedback on a continuing basis, including through regular office hours
• Ensuring course grades are submitted accurately and in a timeline manner

In addition to skills and prior experience that would support these general responsibilities, other positive factors for consideration include prior teaching experience in a college/university setting, experience with Communicative or Task-Based Language Teaching, and experience with online teaching/learning technologies.

Compensation and Benefits
The successful candidate will have an FTE commensurate with the assigned workload. For context, one 5-credit language course is equivalent to 50% FTE. The full-time (100%) base salary range is $5,597 - $5,800 per month commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. This full-time monthly rate would be prorated based on assigned FTE.

Qualifications

By the time of appointment, the successful candidate(s) will have a Master's degree or equivalent foreign degree in French, Italian, Applied Linguistics, or a related field. Applicants interested teaching French courses must have native or near-native ability in French; applicants interested in teaching Italian courses must have native or near-native ability in Italian. All applicants must be proficient in English.
