Director â“ Office for Community Standards 

This is a full-time (100%), 12 month, annual renewable academic professional/administrative staff appointment. This position currently includes some hybrid work options, with flexibility for remote and on-site work as appropriate to the role.

Position Overview:
The Director of Community Standards provides strategic leadership and oversight for the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities student conduct system. Grounded in the Universityâ™s commitment to student development, equity, accountability, and educational integrity, the Director is responsible for advancing community standards that support a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment. This position plays a vital role in resolving complex behavioral cases, supporting student success, and ensuring compliance with the student conduct code and relevant laws and policies. 

The Director also leads proactive community engagement efforts, and serves as a key liaison across the University for
responding to behavioral concerns individually and as they impact the broader campus community. The role directly supervises 3.0 FTE and cultivates a staff culture committed to trauma-informed, equity-centered, fair, compassionate, and developmentally appropriate practice. This position provides strategic advice and counsel, possesses a high level of integrity and demonstrates discretion in sensitive and confidential matters.

Key responsibilities:
Unit Leadership (30%)

• Provide vision and strategic direction for the Office for Community Standards, aligning the work with institutional priorities and national best practices.
• Lead office operations, including staff development, assessment planning, and budget management.
• Develop and implement procedures that support student learning, community accountability, and institutional integrity. This includes oversight of supportive, educational programs outside
  the formal conduct process, such as the Academic Integrity Matters (AIM) program, which addresses scholastic dishonesty, and the Expungement Process, which applies to certain types of non-academic misconduct. Both programs provide restorative pathways for students who have taken full responsibility for their actions, made efforts to repair harm, and are ready to move forward.
• Represent the unit on the Behavioral Consultation Team that supports students in distress,
  including cases that involve students who are a threat to themselves or others.
• Support and guide the unit in handling matters that may involve media coverage, public scrutiny, legal counsel, and concurrent legal proceedings.

Case Management & Student Conduct (25%)

• Oversee the intake, investigation, and resolution of student conduct cases, including academic integrity, student group conduct (in collaboration with various campus partners), and behavioral incidents.
• Ensure timely, fair, compliant, and educational resolution processes in alignment with University policies.
• Personally manage high-severity or high-profile cases and represent the University at formal
  hearings (e.g., Campus Committee on Student Behavior, Sexual Misconduct Hearing Committee).
• Collaborate with Equal Opportunity and Title IX on Title IV and Title IX case procedures.

Supervision & Staff Development (15%)

• Directly supervise a team of three, including an Associate Director (1.0 FTE), a Student Conduct Coordinator (1.0 FTE), and an Office Manager (1.0 FTE).
• Foster a supportive, accountable, and inclusive team environment and encourage ongoing staff learning and professional growth.
• Provide coaching, evaluation, and opportunities for staff learning and innovation.
• Ensure all staff are equipped to work across diverse identities and with a trauma-informed lens.

Campus Engagement & Partnerships (15%)

• Collaborate with partners such as Associate Deans, Assistant Deans, Directors of Graduate Studies, Housing & Residential Life, University of Minnesota Police Department, Equal
  Opportunity and Title IX, Care and Student Advocate Services, Disability Resource Center, International Student and Scholar Services, and others to address student behavior and support well-being.
• Provide consultation and training to faculty, staff, and student leaders regarding conduct-related matters.
• Design and implement community education on integrity, conflict resolution, restorative practices, and student rights/responsibilities.
• Serve in the OSA Emergency On-Call rotation, approximately one week per month

Compliance, Data & Assessment (10%)

• Ensure the conduct process complies with federal, state, and University laws and regulations (e.g. FERPA, Title IX, Title VI, Clery, due process).
• Oversee case management systems, data analysis, and assessment of outcomes.
• Use data to inform decision-making and enhance practice.
• Manage the University response to requests for information related to student conduct records

Professional Development & Service (5%)

• Stay current on evolving legal issues, best practices, and trends in student conduct and higher education.
• Participate in professional associations (e.g., ASCA, ICAI) and serve on University committees (e.g. Student Academic Integrity Committee (SAIC), Executive Advisory Group (EAG), Alcohol and Other Drug Policy, Assessment, and Prevention (APAP), International Student and Scholars Service Liaison Committee, and other committees as appropriate.

Additional Information:

• The annual salary range is $89,000 - $94,339, depending on experience. 
• Work will be completed in a hybrid environment.
• Occasionally, unscheduled evening and weekend remote work may be required to meet the needs of the unit and the institution.

Minimum Qualifications:

• BA/BS plus at least 10 years of related experience or masterâ™s degree plus at least 8 years of relevant experience
• Extensive knowledge of university conduct systems and relevant legal, regulatory, and risk management issues
• Demonstrated commitment towards diversity, equity, and inclusion work including working with diverse populations of students
• Ability to lead a staff team in achieving goals, reinforcing positive performance and addressing areas of improvement
• Demonstrated experience operating with high degree of integrity, judgement, discretion and sensitivity to confidential information.
• Ability to work with student conduct processes in a higher education setting
• Ability to work with college students in distress
• Strong verbal, written, communication, and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:

• Masterâ™s degree in student affairs, counseling, higher education, or related field
• Experience with Academic Integrity, Title IX, and Title VI in higher education
• Highly organized, proactive, strong ability to assist others in navigating through complex situations
• Experience with restorative justice, both in principle and in practice.
• Experience with database management
• Ability to prioritize college student development
• Ability to plan, monitor, evaluate, and manage multiple priorities
• Demonstrated ability to partner and collaborate with campus faculty and staff
• Experience working with student organizations in a campus activities or fraternity/sorority life context
