Pre-Licensed Veterinary Technician - Nursing Care

Looking for a position in veterinary medicine while obtaining your associate's degree in veterinary technology? In partnership with SUNY-Delhi consider this opportunity as a Pre-Licensed Veterinary Technician with Cornell University Hospital for Animals and its Small Animal Nursing Care Unit.

At the direction of a Licensed Veterinary Technician, responsibilities include:

• Assist with physical exams, low stress restraint and handling.
• Administer oral medication to patients.
• Properly organize laboratory samples and transport to the adjacent Animal Health Diagnostic Center for processing.
• Complete in-house point of care laboratory processing.
• Assist with room set up and breakdown for clinical procedures.
• Provide basic animal handling for transport to centralized imaging and anesthesia services.
• Sanitize and disinfect clinical areas and exam rooms in preparation for next patient.
• Escort clients to consultation for appointments.
• Assist with discharging patients including preparation of animal, escorting clients to and from exam rooms to client service and/or pharmacy ensuring a positive client experience.
• Stock assigned clinical areas with materials maintaining an organized workspace.
• Complete basic tasks in CUHA's EMR (ezyVet) such as placing diagnostic requests and placing orders to the CUHA materials warehouse for processing.

  • Urinary catheter placement and care
  • Medical calculations including constant rate infusions
  • Venipuncture and arterial blood sampling
  • Chest tube management
  • Placement and maintenance of central line catheters
  • Using various oxygen therapies such as High Flow and nasal cannulae

The Cornell University Companion Animal Hospital provides round the clock care for small animals 365 days of the year. Our licensed veterinary technicians provide exceptional patient management during:

• Daytime
• Evenings (includes shift differential pay)
• Nights (includes shift differential pay)
• Weekends
• Holidays (includes generous holiday pay)

What qualifications are required?

• High school Diploma and up to 6 months animal handling experience or equivalent combination.
• Actively pursuing associate's degree in SUNY Delhi Veterinary Technology Program; expected to be obtained within 2-3 years.
• Interest in on-going career growth and advanced skill development.
