Position Information:
The University of California Riverside seeks motivated applicants interested in serving the public by becoming a Police Dispatcher for the UC Riverside Police & Campus Safety Department. Under supervision, the Police Dispatcher is an entry-level position that will perform various duties involved in operating the emergency services systems and various communication devices and will receive, route, relay, and dispatch calls for emergency and non-emergency law enforcement, fire, and other services.

**Please be advised that a typing exam will be required as part of the recruitment process.**

The full salary range for the Dispatcher is $31.24 - $41.66 per hour. However, the expected pay scale for this position is up to $37.50 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.

As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.

Recent completion of the POST Public Safety Dispatcher Course.

Experience Requirements

Two years experience in police/fire emergency service dispatching is highly desired. Involving a substantial amount of telephone contact with the public or other employees. Such experience must involve the responsibility to perform numerous tasks simultaneously or progressively responsible experience in a field requiring decision-making ability and the exercise of judgment.

Six months of non-probationary experience as a Public Safety Dispatcher for a law enforcement agency or fire department.

Demonstrated ability handling difficult, sensitive and confidential situations tactfully; accessing and updating various indexes.

Demonstrated skill in correct English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar; rapid and accurate typing; and independently drafting and documenting correspondence pertaining to the operations, policies, and procedures of the functional area. Speak in a clear, concise, and well-modulated voice.

Demonstrated ability to perform effectively under conditions of fluctuating workload, high call volume, interruptions and competing priorities and requirements; utilize excellent interpersonal skills while working as part of a team and collaborating with colleagues; maintain cooperative working relationships; model and promote the University's principles of community and commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Ability to learn operational characteristics of communications equipment and tools used in the area of emergency dispatch. Learn streets, buildings, boundaries, and districts which represent geographical areas of responsibility within the University.

Proficient in the use of computers and computer applications, i.e., word processing, computer aided dispatch systems and Internet applications.

Willing to work rotating shifts with changing days off in a 24-hour/7 day operation.

The ability to learn policies and procedures of receiving, processing, and dispatching emergency calls.

Learn basic communication rules and regulations governing the operation of radio transmitting and receiving systems. Learn standard radio broadcasting and dispatch procedures and rules.

The ability to learn principles and procedures of record keeping including maintenance and security of communications reports.

Demonstrate the ability to work under pressure, exercise good judgement and make sound decisions in emergency situations.

Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate with an elicit information from upset and irate citizens.

Demonstrate the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Apply knowledge and reasoning to make prompt and effective decisions quickly in both routine and non-routine situations. Analyze situations carefully and adopt effective courses of action.

Receive requests for police, fire, or other emergency services over the phone, answer 9-1-1 calls, alternate emergency, and business calls. Monitor agency radio frequencies to be aware of incidents elsewhere that may affect operations..

Demonstrate the ability to to maintain accurate logs of incoming service requests and action taken; enter, update, and retrieve information from the computer and teletype networks.

Department Custom Scope
Under close supervision of the Communications Supervisor, the Dispatcher will perform entry-level work in operating a 911 telephone system and a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system on an assigned shift in support of a 24-hour, 7-day-per-week operation at the UC Riverside Police Department. The Dispatcher is responsible for entering calls into CAD; managing and routing 9-1-1 and Police telephone calls, and prioritizing dispatched calls for service to ensure the safety of all field personnel. The Dispatcher is also responsible for operating and monitoring numerous radios on various frequencies; monitoring fire, robbery, and intrusion alarm systems; making inquiries and entries into computer systems; disseminating information to the proper authority; and operating numerous computer systems with connections to local State and Federal Law enforcement systems.

COMPUTERS SYSTEM OPERATIONS

Process and monitor calls quickly and efficiently by using the CAD system to enter verified data, disseminate information to various bulletins, update indexes, revise pertinent information and close incidents.

Operate CLETS terminal by conducting inquiries, entries, and updates to automated databases.

Send, receive and decode teletype information.

RADIO CONSOLE OPERATIONS AND MONITORING

Communicate by two-way radio with University Police, County Fire, Medical Services, and other campus units by obtaining and transmitting informational requests and notifications needing prompt attention.

Monitor radio systems by determining intrusions, robberies, panic alarms, fire alarms, and closed circuit television screens.

RECORD ADMINISTRATION

Regulate and maintain forms, files and information sources by ensuring the completion of communication service center books and logs.

Verify that updates are being made to all manuals relating to the operation, upkeep, and laws governing the use of computers and computerized information.

Compile data and maintain records of emergency recorded, equipment and personnel dispatched, and/or disposition of emergencies.

Other duties as assigned.
