The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking an ACADEMIC ADVISOR III to select academic advising practices that support student success. To create and maintain a safe, equitable and inclusive environment that is responsive to the needs of an increasingly diverse student population. To have an advanced network of cross-campus relationships and resources. To assist academic unit with the interpretation of institutional regulations, policies, offerings and procedures. To create education plans that are consistent with students' aspirations, interests, strengths and values. To implement personal philosophy of academic advising and utilize multiple advising techniques and styles. To create rapport and maintain relationships with expert level of ability. To adapt academic advising approaches to meet the needs of a diverse student population. To deliver training to advisors within unit. To develop new programming and methods for working with students. To provide leadership within department/unit and UAB community.

Key Responsibilities:

* Prioritizing meaningful support and demonstrated care for students in effort to identify, evaluate, and address student goal-setting, major-declaration, and complex advising needs. Ongoing professional development and training on university policies and procedures, university resources and appropriate referral processes, advising technological tools and best practices, academic program requirements, our diverse student populations, their development and needs, and resources they can use.

* Engagement in proactive strategies for student retention and progression including, but not limited to, early and mid-term alerts, university reinstatement, re-enrollment efforts, strategic outreach, and redirection of students not making progress toward their degrees.

* Management of orientation and registration events for new, transfer, and international students who come to the university undecided about their majors. This includes coordination of presentations at orientation sessions, hands-on direction with registration, individual/small group appointments, development of orientation materials for students and others assisting with orientation, as well as problem-solving and consultation in issues of course availability and student special needs.

* Create and maintain active partnerships with other campus constituents to ensure coordinated support and communication between VMASC and campus partners. This includes facilitating effective student referral processes; identifying student barriers and developing strategies for removing these; and providing holistic student support in partnership with constituents.

* Develop and conduct workshops and programs on topics such as major exploration, career development, and academic success strategies.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Needed:

* Possesses expertise in theoretical models of college student development and transition, along with a strong understanding of advising theory and practices.

* Knowledge of FERPA, state statutes, and rules of higher education within the state of Alabama.

* Proficient in collecting and analyzing data related to student success, with the ability to utilize this information to make informed decisions and projections.

* Strong critical thinking, memorization, attention to detail, and communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently while developing strong collaborative relationships with colleagues, students, and student affairs and academic affairs units.

* Ability to exercise excellent professional judgment and discretion, making decisions on a regular basis that impact student welfare and the institution.

(Annual Salary: $46,530 - $51,000)

Master's degree in Counseling, Education or a related field and four (4) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
