University of Iowa Health Care is seeking an Associate Chief Quality Officer (ACQO) for Critical and Emergency Care. The appointment rank may be at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor level and to either the tenure track or clinical (non-tenure) track consistent with clinical experience. This position will be a 0.5 FTE with the remaining 0.5 FTE as a clinical position in a clinical department within UI Health Care.

The Associate Chief Quality Officer (ACQO) for Critical and Emergency Care at University of Iowa Health Care will:

• Oversee all patient quality and safety initiatives for the adult inpatient ICUs and the Emergency Department;


• Assist the Chief Quality Officer (CQO) in leading the conception, development, and measurement of strategy for quality, safety, and adverse event reduction;


• Provide leadership for performance improvement initiatives in clinical quality and patient safety to ensure that UI Healthcare achieves excellent outcomes. The ACQO will engage in scholarly activities in the areas of epidemiology, clinical quality, patient safety and/or performance improvement.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work collaboratively with the CQO, Associate CQOs for Surgical & Procedural, Adult Inpatient, Children's & Women's, and Ambulatory, as well as other members of the UI Health Care team to promote, evaluate and improve clinical quality and patient safety.

Effectively measure and analyze quality and safety data and advise on strategies for improvement.

Assist in the development and implementation of annual institutional quality and safety goals.

Present institutional Vizient performance data and other data as needed, to appropriate governance and working group structures, facilitating universal understanding of strategic initiatives and influencing staff's ability to contribute to improvement.

Develop and implement programs to improve the human, organizational and system factors that contribute to adverse events.

Collaborate to establish patient care models that increase the safety of patients, clinicians and staff.

Prioritize quality and safety initiatives for Critical and Emergency Care.

Develop and foster partnerships with physician and nursing leadership in the Critical and Emergency Care area, and other areas of the hospital as needed.

Improve risk identification, risk mitigation and error reduction, standardization, improved communication and simplification.

Lead Comprehensive Systematic Analyses (CSAs) in collaboration with CQO and Patient Safety Engineers in the Quality Improvement Program.

Engage in scholarship related to clinical quality and/or patient safety and disseminate results through presentations and publications.

Educate clinicians and learners on clinical quality and patient safety.

Engages staff at all levels as participants in a continual pursuit of improvement opportunities.

Provide leadership and focus on performance excellence for patient satisfaction and regulatory compliance.

Assure a common standard of care and service throughout the System.

Provide guidance and support for system-wide accreditation readiness activities as needed.

Participate on Quality and Safety Oversight Subcommittee, the quality and safety governance body of the institution.

Participate on Patient Safety Steering Committee providing advisement on high harm events and corrective actions. Monitor safety event trends.

Participate on quality and safety working groups as needed to facilitate and progress important strategic projects for the hospital, i.e., CAUTI, CLABSI, HAPI, etc.

Partner with the Director of Respiratory Care and their Department Senior Leader to review and approve protocols, guidelines, and policies related to respiratory care.

Collaborate with the Director of Respiratory Care to provide recommendations on major invasive and non-invasive respiratory care equipment, and address manufacturer safety recalls on respiratory care supplies.

Work with respiratory care staff to review and implement new projects spanning multiple divisions within the Main and SFCH campuses as needed.

Regularly meet with the Respiratory Care Director to review departmental activities and advise on improving staff engagement.

Complete the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Open School (online modules) and the UI Health Care Quality and Process Improvement Model for Health Care training (2- day training) within 6 months of hire (if not already completed).
