The NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights is seeking a Deputy Director (Senior Research Scientist) to advance the Center?s mission to challenge and empower companies and future business leaders to make practical progress on human rights. This high-profile position will work in partnership with the Director on all aspects of the Center?s activities. The Center?s approach combines research, teaching, and engagement with major global companies, governments and business educators. The Deputy Director will oversee the direction of the Center?s research agenda, which includes the production of long form, in-depth reports focused on how global businesses in different industries operate, assessing the human rights challenges they face, and proposing practical recommendations to companies and governments. Following the publication of these reports, the Deputy Director will oversee the Center?s engagement and advocacy aimed at turning the Center?s findings and recommendations into concrete action. Working closely with the Director, the Deputy Director will help chart the Center?s strategic direction and annual program planning sessions, and adapt the Center?s focus as necessary in response to changes in industry, government and academia. The Deputy Director also will work closely with the Director of Operations to bolster the Center?s infrastructure through enhanced fundraising, external communications, and administrative efficiency.
Responsibilities
? Oversee the direction of the Center?s core research programs including Global Labor, Technology and Democracy, Values-Based Investing; make executive decisions about which projects are taken on by the Center?s research team and how resources are deployed.
? Support the development and expansion of the Center?s Business Education program, including the growth of its global business and human rights business school network in partnership with the Global Business School Network.
? Participate actively in the planning and implementation of fundraising for the Center?s self-funded operating budget, focused on foundations and individual donors.
? Promote the Center?s work and mission among various other external stakeholders.
? Represent the Center and the Center?s work in presentations, op-eds and short papers, and statements to leading global companies, government entities, academic institutions, civil society organizations, and media; attend relevant conferences and events on behalf of the Center with a particular eye toward advancing the Center?s recommendations to industry leaders.
? Engage with the NYU Stern School leadership team to ensure the Center is a strong contributor to the school?s culture, priorities, and programming; ideally be open to teaching human rights courses in Stern?s MBA program and guest lecturing in various Stern classes.

Wage Transparency
In compliance with NYC?s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $125,000-$157,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
? Master?s degree or higher required.
? A deep understanding of and vision for the evolution of the business and human rights issues the Center is tackling.
? Strong management skills including experience leading teams; demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain strong working relationships and to serve as a mentor.
? Experience in public engagement and the ability to represent the Center in public and private settings with an eye toward boosting its public profile and forwarding its mission.
? Extensive experience interacting with the business community or deep understanding of how businesses operate, familiarity with government operations, and familiarity with the current business and human rights landscape.
? Ability to serve as a connection point for research leads and business, government and civil society to ensure the advancement of the Center?s agenda in these spheres.
? Excellent written and verbal communication. Experience writing op-eds, white papers, or other public-facing work preferred.
? Past teaching experience preferred, especially in a university setting.
? Past experience fundraising on behalf of an organization preferred.
? Preferred 10 years or more of work experience, ideally on human rights or related issues within a company, government agency, advocacy organization, university, or think tank, or a combination of experience and education.
