The Department of Performing Arts at Georgetown University invites applications for the role of Assistant Professor of the Practice & Manager of the Costume Shop, to begin on August 1, 2025. This position combines academic teaching responsibilities with the operational management of the costume shop at the Davis Performing Arts Center, ideally suited for a candidate who excels in both educational and practical aspects of theater production.

The Davis Performing Arts Center, a cornerstone of Georgetown University since its opening in 2005, represents the university's commitment to the integration of creative exploration and scholarly endeavor within its state-of-the-art facilities. The center enhances the educational experiences of students and fosters community engagement through diverse and innovative performances.

This position allots 40% of the role to teaching three courses per year, including designing and delivering instruction related to costume design and including Costume Shop Practicum and upper-level Theater and Performance Studies courses. The successful candidate will develop curriculum that bridges theoretical knowledge with practical application, fostering students' skills in both design and production.

The remaining 60% of the role is dedicated to the management of the costume shop operations. The responsibilities include overseeing the design, production, and maintenance of costumes for departmental productions, managing budgets, and ensuring efficient use of resources. The role requires leadership in coordinating a team of work-study students and part-time staff, maintaining high standards of craftsmanship, and collaborating with directors and production staff to achieve artistic visions within budget and timelines.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold an MFA in Costume Design or a related field and have a minimum of three years of experience in a similar role, ideally in an academic setting. The position demands a proven track record of effective teaching and the ability to engage and inspire students, alongside strong managerial skills and a comprehensive understanding of costume production processes.

Expertise in a range of costume design and construction techniques, such as cutting, draping, flat patterning, and garment construction, is essential. Familiarity with tailoring, fabric dyeing, and costume crafts will enable the successful candidate to support both traditional and innovative production needs. Additional skills in wig styling and ventilation, puppet making, and stage or prosthetic makeup are highly desirable, as is a broad knowledge of costume and fashion history.

The projected base salary range is is $68,000-75,000. Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
