Teaching - 10%
The incumbent will be expected to oversee educational programs for residents, fellows, and medical students in trauma and critical care. They will mentor junior faculty and foster professional development opportunities. They will also be expected to participate in the teaching programs of the Department of Surgery at Rhode Island Hospital, which includes residents in General Surgery and fellows, as well as interdisciplinary teaching programs with other Divisions and Departments within the hospital and the medical school. Participation would include curriculum development, teaching, mentoring and evaluation of students and trainees.
Research ? Up to 20%
Candidates with an interest in pursuing basic, translational, or clinical research programs pertaining to the field of general surgery will be provided opportunities to pursue research at Brown. The incumbent will be expected to promote and support clinical, translational, and basic science research initiatives as well as ongoing efforts in innovation at Brown Health and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. They will also be expected to secure funding for research programs through grants and institutional support as well as publish and present findings at national and international forums.
Patient Care ? 50-70%
The incumbent will oversee the administration and participate in the clinical aspects of the division, including the inpatient service and the outpatient clinics as well as sharing and overseeing call coverage and consultative services.
Service/Administrative Responsibilities - 20%
The incumbent will be expected to maintain a positive working relationship in all activities of the Division of Trauma and Critical Care within the Department of Surgery and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. They will be responsible for development and execution of the division?s strategic goals in alignment with departmental and institutional objectives. They will manage the division?s budget, staffing, and resource allocation, and collaborate with hospital administration on operational initiatives, including trauma center accreditation and compliance. They will also strengthen relationships with pre-hospital providers, regional hospitals, and community organizations, leading initiatives aimed at injury prevention and public education on trauma care.
Minimum requirements include board certification in general surgery and surgical critical care with a minimum of 7-10 years of post-fellowship clinical and academic experience. The applicant should have proven track record of leadership in a multidisciplinary team setting with demonstrated success in research, education, and program development. The applicant must meet the requirements to be eligible for appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor of Surgery in the Research Scholar or Teaching Scholar tracks at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University to include an established record of scholarly achievements and publications with a national or international reputation. The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader with a strong track record of academic achievement, administrative experience, and a commitment to advancing the fields of trauma surgery and critical care. Highly desirable attributes include expertise in quality improvement and performance management in trauma care, and the ability to inspire and motivate teams, fostering a culture of collaboration.
