Job Description Summary
The Director of Community Standards plays a crucial role for the Miami University community by efficiently and professionally managing the university's student conduct system. The director is responsible for evaluating conduct reports, adjudicating cases, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, and providing training and guidance on student conduct issues. They supervise a team of full-time staff members, including assistant directors, an associate director/Title IX investigator, and administrative and student support staff, and manage faculty and staff volunteers who serve as conduct officers or on conduct boards.
Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students, the director works to ensure a fair, just, and educational disciplinary process for all students. They prioritize creating a campus environment that fosters respect, civility, and integrity. The director oversees the student conduct system for approximately 22,000 students across multiple campuses (Oxford, Hamilton, Middletown, VOA, and Luxembourg) and provides support and guidance to students to promote responsible behavior.
Job Description
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Lead the Office of Community Standards, set office priorities, and supervise five full-time staff members to manage the timely resolution of all individual and organizational student conduct cases, including Title IX adjudication. Triage and process student conduct cases, monitor for timely case resolution, audit sanction completion, and process student conduct records requests.

Work closely with the Office of General Counsel, the Associate Vice President/Dean of Student, the Senior VP for Student Life, and other campus partners (e.g. Residence Life and the Center for Student Engagement, Activities, and Leadership) to evaluate and update the Code of Student Conduct and related policies as needed to remain compliant with changing laws and regulations.

Support the maintenance of the student conduct database (Maxient) by performing regular audits and updates.

Advise individual students and their parents/advisors regarding university policies and their rights and responsibilities.

Provide ongoing outreach and education for constituencies (including students, faculty, staff, parents, and community members) involving student conduct matters.

Provide strategic leadership for, and supervise, mentor, direct, and evaluate the staff of Community Standards.

Serve as a hearing officer or advisor in critical cases related to violations of Miami's Code of Student Conduct, including cases related to sexual and interpersonal violence.

Manage student conduct records, including crime statistics, to ensure compliance with federal regulations and internal reporting requirements.

Develop, review, revise, and oversee the training processes for all those associated with adjudication of cases, including faculty and staff volunteers, and Residence Life staff.

As a representative of the division, productively respond to and partner with

external stakeholders (parents, attorneys, Oxford Police, etc.);

faculty, staff, and students outside of the Division of Student Life; and

intra-divisional colleagues to advance the strategic objectives of the university, the division, and the office of community standards

In partnership with the Office of the Dean of Students, facilitate the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) process designed to assist students in resolving conflict.

Review and manage budgets, strategically allocating resources to align with divisional priorities.

Monitor and track legislation and legal precedent to ensure university compliance with relevant and current laws.

Advance all assessment and continued improvement efforts in alignment with divisional strategic priorities.

Serve on university committees as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

A Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling, social work, or a closely related field, or Juris Doctor (JD) degree

By the start date, at least five years of work experience following the conferral of a graduate degree or three years of work experience following conferral of a J.D.

Experience in the student conduct process at a college of university or an administrative law setting.
Preferred Qualifications

Three to five years experience with a records management system, such as Maxient.

Familiarity with restorative justice practices/alternative dispute resolution methods in a higher education setting

Experience overseeing investigations or familiarity with internal investigation best practices.
