The American Indian and Indigenous Studies Program (AIISP)- Coord Program II, Associate Director- CALS

Department Background:

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University's second-largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical, and economic well-being.

AIISP embodies a full-circle educational program. This entails the 1) formal academic, research, and intellectual efforts of AIIS faculty and students through courses, research projects, community collaborations, and scholarship; 2) retention and recruitment of Native American and Indigenous students in all disciplines of the University with structured programming designed for support student success; and 3) the living-learning residential building of Akweko:n wherein Native and non-Native students are provided program activities designed to enhance mutual understanding and collective well-being.

Position Summary:

Overview: Reporting to the AIISP faculty Director and in close collaboration with faculty, the Associate Director supports the academic, student services, and residential pillars of AIISP. The position is responsible for program planning, development and evaluation; program management and oversight of daily operations; and outreach and collaboration with community partners.

Program Planning, Development and Evaluation: In consultation with the Director: Plan and develop AIISP student support and academic programs and initiatives; define needs for new or existing programs, and develop programs and materials; Establish program goals, making the best use of available resources; Review and evaluate program outcomes to determine the effectiveness of existing programs and what adjustments to make; Develop and implement of AIISP marketing and communications plan; Collaborate with Cornell Partners to leverage resources to further mutual goals that support AIISP programs and strategic priorities; Research, recommend and implement programmatic policies, procedures, and practices; Provide regular reports to Director to support planning; Research, identify and pursue funding opportunities to support AIISP priorities including proposal development and grant writing as needed.

Program Management: Oversee coordination of student programs, academic initiatives, and special projects, such as program celebrations, recognition events, academic conferences, panels and similar programs; Oversee implementation of AIISP marketing and communications plan and website updates; Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate staff, setting priorities and scheduling work to assure that required activities are accomplished in a timely manner; Supervise the AIISP Administrative Assistant, Student Support Specialist, and Akwe:kon Program Assistant, including hiring and performance management in conjunction with the Administrative Manager and CALS HR; Develop, manage and monitor the program budget in consulation with Director and Administrative Manager; In collaboration with Administrative Manager, monitor procurement of goods/services, use of AIISP accounts, and fund balances to ensure sound stewardship of program funding in alignment with AIISP strategic goals; Oversee graduate assistantship appointments and student hiring; Responsible for ensuring that all AIISP student and volunteer programs comply with Cornell policies; Identify, recommend and implement procedures to streamline program and administrative procedures to optimize use of resources and program impact.

Outreach: The position also collaborates with local communities/partners such as Indigenous Nations (especially the Haudenosaunee), Multicultural Resource Center, History Center, and other partners to further mutual goals that support AIISP strategic priorities.

Required Qualifications:

• Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
• Demonstrated skill in understanding of cultural differences.
• Bachelor's degree and 2-4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.
• Strong analytical and reasoning skills.
• Proven organizational skills with the ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple projects.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills to reach many constituencies both inside and outside Cornell.
• Ability to independently manage position responsibilities as well as work collaboratively with program staff and faculty on shared projects.
• Ability to learn a variety of internal Cornell systems to effectively carry out job responsibilities.
• Must be adaptable and adjust to changing environments and priorities.
• Experience in managing and supervising staff including performance management.
• Experience with budgeting and financial management, including procurement.
• High level of discretion and sound judgment with confidential information.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree in Social Sciences, Humanities, or Education.
• Coursework or degree in Indigenous Studies.
• Experience working with Indigenous populations.
• Experience in grant writing.
