The Sergeant supervises Campus Police Officers, Campus Safety Officers, Gatehouse attendants, and student workers. This is a responsible and specialized criminal investigation and first-line supervisory work. The work requires integrating many different and unrelated processes relating to well-established aspects of criminal investigation. Incumbents are required to make decisions regarding what needs to be done, including assessing unusual circumstances, determining variations in approach, and researching incomplete or conflicting data. Flexibility and judgment are required to interpret and adapt guidelines such as departmental policies, regulations, precedents, and work direction for application to specific cases or problems.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive criminal investigations and violations of College policies.
• Supervise, coordinate, mentor, train, assign, review, and approve the work of subordinate staff.
• Coordinate activities with other law enforcement agencies or support agencies if needed.
• Obtain information or secure evidence against persons alleged to have committed a crime or violation of College policy.
• Interview and/or interrogate suspects, complainants, witnesses, and victims to obtain information about violations of College policy or crimes that may have occurred.
• Manage and/or investigate crime scenes and assume responsibility for the search for and preservation of evidence.
• Conduct specialized investigations; make decisions regarding what actions are needed, including assessing unusual circumstances, determine variations in approach and research incomplete or conflicting data; prepare and execute legal processes or documents.
• Appear in court or administrative hearings to present evidence and testify.
• Assist hearing boards with the preparation and presentation of cases.
• Work a flexible schedule and/or job assignment, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
• Perform all Primary and Essential Functions as required by the Chief or Lieutenant of Patrol and Investigative Services.
• Maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance during regularly scheduled work hours at assigned worksite.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the current principles, practices, and techniques of investigation, police organization, administration, supervision, and training, knowledge of laws pertaining to the apprehension, arrest, and prosecution of persons; knowledge of current principles, practices, and techniques of law enforcement and crime prevention in a college setting, including patrol, juvenile delinquency, communications, support services, and other specialized police operations.
• May serve as a shift supervisor.
• Respond to incidents and ensure appropriate response; make arrests as necessary, ensure the response is within accepted police practices and principles and departmental policies and procedures.
• Prepare and ensure that patrol officers write, clear and concise reports of factual occurrences.
• Work in confidentiality, utilize discretion and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Assist patrol officers as they conduct investigations.
• Prepare and submit reports as directed by the Chief of Police or his designee including summaries of cases, incidents, and investigative reports, training, property, evidence, and community relations programs, as well as all other assigned tasks.

Supervision Received and Exercised
Work is performed under the general supervision and direction of the Chief of Police or Captain with the employee expected to plan and assign work independently after objectives, priorities, and deadlines have been defined. Work is reviewed in progress and upon completion by the administrative supervisor for thoroughness, timeliness, and compliance with regulations, policies, and procedures; and is assigned in terms of overall objectives and resources available.

Education & Experience

A minimum of a high school diploma or GED is required. The following is strongly preferred: An associate degree or higher in Criminal Justice or related field; five years of supervisory experience, five years of detective experience, five years of related work experience, or a combination of education and experience. Graduation from either the Massachusetts Special State Police Academy, Massachusetts Municipal Police Academy, or an equivalent academy is required. Must be able to obtain police powers under M.G.L. C22C §63, maintain a valid MA FID card, current CPR, First Responder, and AED Certification. A valid Driver’s License and other necessary certifications are required.
