The Health Communications Specialist advances primary prevention of sexually transmitted infection (STI), hepatitis c virus (HCV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) throughout California by using innovative tools to develop and evaluate engaging health communication resources targeted to key state and local stakeholders. This position reports to the the Health Promotion and Communications Unit Chief at the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Sexually Transmitted Diseases Control Branch and will independently oversee a comprehensive communications program for the STD Control Branch with moderately complex communications requirements. The Health Communications Specialist provides technical assistance to reinforce health promotion, education, and community capacity building within local health jurisdictions across the state, including written, visual, digital, and electronic communications. The Health Communications Specialist supports implementation of the California Healthy Youth Act (CHYA) through the provision of sexual health education training and technical assistance for educational partners serving youth.

This position develops new public health communications and education materials that translate data into visually compelling tools centering racial equity and accessibility to diverse audiences of varied backgrounds and languages. The Health Communications Specialist examines new and existing health promotion materials to evaluate utility and scope and works with management to develop and execute organizational communication and STD Control Branch branding strategy. This position uses skills as an experienced health communications professional to help local stakeholders assess communication priorities, including racial equity, as well as design and implement information compaigns to address them. This position provides statewide partners and STD Control Branch colleagues with support, expertise, and project management on designing, developing, and disseminating new public awareness programs, health promotion resources, social media campaigns, and other communications projects that address STI and HIV prevention at multiple levels. This position develops and maintains a wide variety of partnerships to meet the complex needs of underserved populations in California communities. This position oversees the CDPH STD Control Branch public webpages and ensures webpage content is updated, engaging, user-friendly, accessible and inclusive of priority populations.

This position is headquartered in Fresno, Sacramento, or Richmond, CA with options for a telework schedule. This position requires mild to moderate travel (less than 10% time). Travel expenses associated with commuting to the headquarters location are not reimbursable, other than authorized transit subsidies.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.
