DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

Construction and Heavy Equipment Lease & Repair Shop is a recharge department consisting of 2 units that report to Transportation Services. This position is part of a construction team for a wide range of outdoor construction projects, including repairs and preventative maintenance to campus roadways, paths, parking lots, bicycle lanes and sidewalks.

JOB SUMMARY

Under general direction of the Construction Lead, provide journey level construction and leadership services as a concrete/mason in maintenance, repair, and installation for concrete landscape projects (pads, ramps, stairs walls, sidewalks, driveways, patios, etc.) with responsibility for budget, schedule and quality of workmanship. Assist in construction projects and operate construction equipment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Lift, stoop, sit or bend for up to eight hours per day.
• Lifts up to 70 lbs.
• Read standard English text, gauges, and instrumentation.
• Hearing to recognize running machinery and communicate via mobile radio.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Valid CA driver's license required (required to operate UC vehicle on/off campus travel). Position will participate in the DMV Pull Notice System. A copy of DMV record will be required as a final condition of employment.
• Limited vacation during peak workload periods.
• May, at times, work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards include but are not limited to: industrial and agricultural chemicals, fuel, solvents, infectious materials and wastes, biological hazards and other materials labeled hazardous.
• Employee is personally responsible for following and adhering to Departmental Injury Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP) and University Safety procedures and guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

Additional Minimum License/Certification

• Must possess a certification of completion from a recognized union apprenticeship program, University apprenticeship program, accredited trade school or have the equivalent amount of experience and training comparable to a journey level craftsperson in concrete/mason.

Minimum Education/Experience

• Completion of 3-year apprenticeship program administered by the International Union of Operating Engineers, or a combination of classroom instruction and on-the-job training equivalent to 6,000 hours of experience operating heavy equipment.
• Experience in paving with hot asphalt mix, setting concrete forms, shooting grade, pouring and finishing concrete, establish safety zones, set shoring and inspect worksite for hazardous conditions, asphalt paving process and repairs, and concrete finishing tools and design standards used in forming and pouring concrete.
• Experience in operation of non-articulating loader-tractor with box scraper, road graders as used to crown roads and cut ditches and vibratory rollers and water truck. Skill in use of laser equipment to cut grade, establish drainage, slope and sidefall.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)

• Knowledge of concrete mason installation codes. Basic knowledge Federal, State, Local and Fire codes. Skill to interpret and apply federal, state and university rules, regulations, and policies.
• Ability to maintain proficiency in concrete mason and landscape trades and related equipment through self-study and selected training.
• Analytical skill to review, understand and foresee the potential implications of technical data, blueprints, construction specifications or instructions and possible impacts on campus systems, customer operations and sustainable maintenance programs.
• Knowledge of typical carpentry techniques, tool selection and wall and fence construction including masonry, wood, chain-link and welded wire. Ability to use a variety of power hand tools commonly used in carpentry, masonry, and repairs.

Preferred:

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)

• Skill to operate and maintain a variety of tools and equipment including forklift, air compressor, jackhammers, air spades, earth compactors, chipping guns, dump and lift trucks, skiploader and tractors, trenches, augers, etc.
• Skill in using machines requiring constant adherence to instrumentation, load charts, audible alarm systems, and calculate safe loads from load chart, boom angle and center swing.
• Skill to follow schematics and assembly diagrams, and perform general outdoor facility repair and deliver scheduled maintenance.
• Knowledge of equipment used in compaction, constructing pads/foundations. Knowledge of equipment safety inspections as applicable to cables, winch, rigging, boom, and mast.
• Knowledge of aggregates and their common uses, backfilling and grading and typical foundation and flatwork.
• Skill in using desktop database software sufficient to enter, edit and query data.
• Ability to train and lead other team members as required.
