Assistant Piano Technician 5-month Fixed Term

The University of Southern California Thornton School of Music is looking for a knowledgeable, energetic Assistant Piano Technician 5-month Fixed Term to join the Thornton’s Operation department.

The Assistant Piano Technician for the USC Thornton School of Music will be responsible for the instruments located in the main campus and practice facility. Expectations for the maintenance of the instruments include frequent tunings as well as the handling of emergency repairs and the application of strategic preventative maintenance measures. This role will take technical and artistic guidance from the Senior Piano Technician.

• Work hours: 7:00AM-3:30PM Monday through Friday (additional work hours occasionally required). 

• 5 months fixed-term, with the possibility of continued full-time employment.

Preferred Experience:

• Completion of Steinway training course(s) highly desirable.

• Experience tuning harpsichords preferred with an interest in developing skills.

• Experience at the college or university level supporting the challenges of an enterprise environment as well as the unique technical demands of faculty and student artists.

• Experience with Steinways, Yamahas, and Bostons preferred.

• Strong business writing and communication skills are preferred.

• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritize repairs, and tuning schedules.

• Have a collaborative spirit for tackling repairs and piano projects.

• Be able to provide strong customer service skills with a professional attitude and demeanor.

• Be able to become proficient using EMS Scheduling software, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Sharepoint, Google Suite, Asana, and Slack.

• Be adaptable to new technologies and systems.

• Be able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment with many distractions.

Required Experience:

• Demonstrated expertise in aural or ETD (Electric Tuning Device) tuning and basic piano maintenance.

• Have knowledge and experience with ETD with iRCT Reyburn Cyber Tuner or similar program.

Job Qualifications:

• Minimum: Highschool or Equivalent
• Minimum Experience: 3 years
• Minimum Field Experience: Specialized experience in Piano Technology

Preferred Education:

• Bachelor’s degree or certificate from a Piano Technology program, and least one year of tuning experience. Registered Piano Technician certification from Piano Technicians Guild highly desirable

Salary Hiring Range

The hourly base salary range for this position is $30.00 to $32.00.
