Job Overview

The Research Specialist II assists with successful completion of milestones as laid out in grant milestones, wherein the work includes optimization of MS sample preparation, development of small molecule quantitation assays, and design of MRM assays in accordance with GLP (Good Laboratory practices). Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Uses advanced metabolomic tools for developing small molecule quantitation assays, preparation and analysis of biological samples for mass spectrometric analysis for supporting NIH funded project to clinical and translational research with a metabolomics focus in AD.
• Determines assay precision and accuracy and generates raw data on LC/MS instruments, Pre- and Post-processing the data using algebraic and statistical calculations in Excel and R and various software's viz.
• Performs XCMS, MetaboAnalyst, and database searches of metabolomic biomarkers in METLIN, LIPIDMAPS, HMDB, MMCD, generations of technical reports.
• Schedules Mass spectrometry instrument operations and maintenance, data backup on a UIS drive, maintaining laboratory in compliance with safety procedures, general laboratory upkeep that includes autoclaving, scheduling waste disposal, update of chemical inventory.
• Uses advanced metabolomic tools for the preparation, acquisition and analysis of metabolomics data
• Performs validation studies using molecular and cellular biology techniques

Work Interactions

Reporting to Dr. Amrita K Cheema, the Research Specialist II received work instructions to acquire, analyze data, design, and develop mass spectrometry methodologies necessary for accurate knowledge discovery.

They work closely with the research associates in the laboratory and assists them with day-to-day service-related functions; and periodically participate in teleconferences to discuss experimental design with project collaborators for scientific coordination and data reporting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree - preference for Master's degree in Chemistry/Biotechnology/Biochemistry/Computational Biology
• 3 to 5 years of related experience - including 1 to 2 years of experience in mass spectrometry operations, maintenance, sample preparation, data pre and post processing; and 1 - 2 years of experience in data consolidation and reporting in a core facility setting
• Ability to work under moderate supervision
• High-level of multitasking ability to
• Expertise in laboratory techniques, including but not limited to sample preparation, molecular and cellular biology techniques - such as cell culture, western blots, ELISA, RTPCR, and extracellular vesicle isolation
• Willingness and availability to work dedicated work hours

Preferred qualifications

• Experience with quantitative and qualitative statistical analyses and tests
• Experience in post-processing analyses of mass spectrometry data
• Strong verbal and written communications skills
• Ability to multi-task
