| Summary of Position: | The Dean of Student Life is responsible for developing and overseeing programs that enable students to realize their fullest intellectual and personal potential, and for integrating student life experiences with the University’s mission and core values. The Dean of Student Life is responsible for the leadership and overall direction and supervision of a portfolio of reporting directors within the Division of Student Affairs, including but not limited to the departments of: Birkam Health Center; Personal Counseling Center; Center for Student Involvement; Career and Professional Success; Kendall College of Art and Design Student Engagement Office; LGBTQ+ Center; Office of Multicultural Student Services; Office of Student Conduct; Student Life; Title IX; David L. Eisler Center; and University Recreation. By working with and representing the interests of a diverse student body, the Dean ensures a mutually reinforcing relationship between the academic and non-academic areas of the University. Reporting directly to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Dean of Student Life plays a central role in defining the strong sense of community that unites students, faculty, and staff across the University. The Dean of Student Life, in conjunction with other offices within Student Affairs and across the University, designs, plans, and directs a variety of student life functions related to supporting students, including but not limited to adult, commuter, veterans, transfer, multicultural, LGBTQIA, as well as other student populations. The Dean of Student Life is essential in developing systematic ways to assess, improve, and renew programs in all areas of supervision, utilizing benchmarks to identify best practices and gathering the data necessary for informed decision-making. The Dean of Student Life makes recommendations regarding severe student conduct incidents, activates interim suspensions as necessary, and responds to conduct appeals as appropriate. | |

| Essential Duties/Responsibilities: | Flexibly and creatively determine and respond to the changing needs of students, and being able to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff. Oversee policies and procedures for the administration of Student Life at Ferris State University as a Student Affairs administrator. Serve as supervisor to the Associate Dean of Student Life, Title IX Coordinator, the Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Student Life, and the Directors of the Birkam and Personal Counseling Center, Career and Professional Success; Office of Student Conduct, Office of Multicultural Student Services; and Kendall College of Art and Design Student Engagement. Provide and promote on-going staff development opportunities to encourage teamwork, motivation, professional development, and overall effectiveness. Recommend and implement policies, procedures, and organizational changes affecting assigned areas of direct report. Analyze and respond to personnel issues within assigned areas of direct report and across the Division and recommend solutions to the Vice President for Student Affairs. Review and provide recommendations regarding the annual production of policies and procedures outlined in the Code of Student Community Standards. Serve as an appeals officer for student conduct cases involving outcomes less than suspension or dismissal. Track, review and address written Student Life complaints as appropriate. Respond to student of concern and crisis situations as a member of the University-Wide Emergency Response Teams. Oversee the tracking and follow-up of severe student mental health and behavioral concerns. Respond to referrals from faculty, staff and students who are seeking assistance with students experiencing personal difficulties or other challenges to their progression to graduation. Oversee the weekly Student Life Weekend Review Team meetings with the Director of Student Conduct in collaboration with the Department of Public Safety, Residence Life, Personal Counseling and Health Centers, General Counsel, and others to address student misconduct concerns. Develop behavioral intervention strategies for students who are unable to effectively self-manage both inside and outside the classroom. Lead the Division Diversity committee and recommend Division diversity priorities and goals, reporting on progress toward those priorities and goals. Lead the implementation of a division-wide assessment program that assesses departmental operations, learning outcomes, and departmental goals, which in return provides for the generation of effective feedback and strategies/recommendations for improvement. Monitor and oversee the operational budgets in designated areas of direct report as well as assist in the Division of Student Affairs budgetary planning processes. Provide planning and operational assistance through active participation and leadership on various Student Affairs and University task forces, committees and councils. Support student leadership development and success initiatives as developed by various departments within the Division of Student Affairs. Serve as lead advisor to the Student Government Association. Work collaboratively with faculty and academic support programs to facilitate and enhance support services for students. Collaborate across campus and in the community to develop a student culture where students learn to respect differences, take responsibility for their actions, and exercise leadership. Maintain current knowledge of changing student development theory, needs, and demographics. Assist the Vice President for Student Affairs and the Dean of Enrollment Services in enrollment efforts for the University. Represent the University and Division of Student Affairs at community and external events as appropriate. Facilitate, review, and follow-up on matters impacting Greek Life ensuring that the University is encouraging the development of a healthy Greek organizational system. Lead efforts for Ferris State to maintain compliance with the Title IX policies. This includes supervising the Title IX Coordinator, assisting with creating and implementing training for the greater campus regarding their role as a Responsible Employee, working with staff to implement a bystander program, attending a number of training and state-wide meetings on this topic, designing organizational responses and numerous other types of outreach. Assist with coordination of NAVIGATE, a University-wide retention and diversity tool. Foster and model an atmosphere of mutual respect, caring, collective engagement, accountability, and personal growth in the Division of Student Affairs. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with University policies and applicable laws. Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of designated information. Serve as a liaison with community leaders including various police agency leaders, city council, and community service organizations, stressing an appreciation of the University’s mission and core values to ensure effective town/gown relations. Assist the areas of direct report and various campus constituents in developing and managing major co- curricular learning and service opportunities, ensuring that these opportunities align with the mission and core values of the University. Develop and coordinate policies and procedures relative to minimizing risks associated with registered student organization programming and the planning of general student activities. Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.
