Electronics/Integration Engineer I

Position Summary

Michigan State University operates FRIB as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics.

As one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities, FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. FRIB hosts what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, enabling scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry.

The establishment of FRIB was funded by the DOE-SC, Michigan State University (MSU), and the State of Michigan, and user facility operation is supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. Since 2010, MSU’s nuclear physics graduate program is ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report’s rankings of graduate programs.

Purpose:

The Electronics/Integration Engineer I will assist with supporting the life cycle (design, fabrication, testing, installation, and maintenance) of custom electronics and related ancillary equipment supporting heavy-ion accelerator development and operation. This position will also assist with lab-wide systems integration/planning in such contexts as (but not limited to) cable/equipment/infrastructure planning/coordination/documentation.      

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

• Electronics 
  • Construct, modify and assist in developing engineering prototypes accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Provide basic technical direction to support staff and students.
  • Develop test plans, perform tests, and document test results for employed electronic components/systems.
  • Seek critical evaluation/feedback of designs.
  • Find means to improve productivity, quality, and uniformity.
  • Maintain up-to-date, accurate, and readily available documentation.
• System Integration 
  • Plan/Oversee installation of experimental/technical cables lab wide.
  • Assist with large scale system/infrastructure design/documentation.
  • Maintain existing database/software tools and develop new methods to improve efficiency/accessibility/clarity.
  • Assist all technical groups with schematic/drawing/procedure creation.
• Provide support for the operations and maintenance of electronic systems, during beam operation which may occur outside of normal operating hours. 
• Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Working knowledge of basic electronic principles, system topologies, and test equipment.
• Ability to use software systems to track drawing approvals and revisions.
• Ability to read and check schematics and other electrical drawings.
• Ability to be on-call 24/7 during beam operation
• Ability to communicate effectively with suppliers.
• Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing, with all audiences.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites.                                                                                        

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Bachelor’s degree in Systems or Computer Science; or Engineering or Physics, with coursework in Systems or Computer Science; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in electronics, mechanical and/or electrical drafting and fabrication techniques, or computer programming in one or more languages used by FRIB; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

• One to three years of progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in electronics, mechanical and/or electronic drafting and fabrication
• Experience in the use of CAD and/or related engineering systems
• Proficiency with code-driven spreadsheets and database software/tools
• Experience with electronics design, applicable testing equipment, and troubleshooting at the system and component levels
• Experience to create, read, and interpret schematics
• Experience using PC/Windows software (Microsoft Office) and electronic simulation software (PSpice, etc.)
