Job Description
The Boston University Libraries are seeking a Head for Research Services for Instruction and Consultation to respond to emerging needs in a dynamic University instructional environment. Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Research & Learning, this position provides leadership for the Boston University Libraries advanced instructional and consultation programming, including and especially library-initiated instruction and research consultation services, and provides leadership for individual subject specialists and liaisons in the Research and Learning division in their work in these programs. This position directly supervises a group of subject specialists and liaisons within the Research and Learning division and manages their work in support of divisional and library-wide goals in coordination with the Head, Research Services for Data and Collections, and the Library Experience Manager.

The Head, Research Services for Instruction and Consultation, is responsible for articulating and executing a plan for advanced research support services in the areas of instruction and consultation and works closely with colleagues in Access Services and other stakeholders and decision-makers in the provision of outreach and instructional services to develop and sustain a comprehensive suite of research services to meet the needs of the Boston University community. The Head, Research Services for Instruction and Consultation, is responsible for engaging with faculty and students and participating in the development, delivery, and assessment of instructional and consultation programs to support research and learning. This position conducts regular assessment of Research and Learning instructional and consultation services and works with the Associate University Librarian and other leadership to align service provision with division and Libraries-wise goals.

This is a new position with Boston University Libraries and reflects the transformation happening inside the Research and Learning division. The Research and Learning division is responsible for many core library services, such as circulation, course reserves, and interlibrary loan, in addition to the research services provided by our subject specialists and liaisons. This role will directly supervise eight subject specialists and liaisons, including the supervision of subject branch liaisons and specialists, with an overall management portfolio that includes indirect reports. The management portfolio includes liaisons and specialists from across the range of disciplines studied at Boston University, including STEM, social sciences and area studies, humanities and classics, and fine and performing arts.

This position is part of the leadership team within Research and Learning, and will have as peers the Head, Research Services for Data and Collections, the Head of Access Services and Library Experience, and the Head of Materials Services. As part of the leadership team, this position will help to shape the delivery of services across the scope of the Research and Learning division and facilitate our evolution in response to emerging campus needs.

Responsibilities

• Develop an active program of workshops and instructional sessions for the Research and Learning division. Work with subject specialists and liaisons to understand departmental and programmatic needs, especially research priorities, major initiatives, and areas of interdisciplinary collaboration. Work with the Associate University Librarian for Research and Learning to plan and oversee the advanced research services program and make resource allocation decisions.
• Work directly with all subject specialists and liaisons participating in the instructional and consultation programs in the Research and Learning division to communicate strategic objectives, coordinate efforts, and ensure coverage for the portfolio of research services for instruction and consultation. Support divisional and library-wide goals through leadership of instructional and consultation services, especially through the coordination of subject specialists and liaisons contributions to these programs.
• Work with the Head, Access and Library Experience, the Library Experience Manager, the User Services Manager, and other stakeholders and decision-makers to coordinate outreach and research services for major campus events and milestones (e.g., orientation, graduation, final exams). Develop library instruction and consultation programs that align with other user services and support, especially with the Library Experience department. Work with the Library Technology and Discovery Department, Access and Library Experience, the Communications Manager, and other stakeholders and decision-makers to support the communication and outreach around library services across our media platforms.
• Supervise subject specialists and liaisons as assigned. Support the professional development of assigned staff and provide management feedback, coaching, and performance evaluation. Advocate for subject specialist and liaison needs. Share communications from leadership and create space for information sharing by supervised individuals.
• Serve as selector and principal liaison in assigned areas. Provide advanced reference and research support. Participate in library instructional activities. Assist in the provision of outreach services, acting as a principal for instructional and consultation issues.
