Overview
The South Bay Latino Research Center (SBLRC) seeks to promote research that improves cardiovascular disease outcomes in diverse Hispanic/Latino populations living in the border region of San Diego. Using principles of Community-based Participatory Research, SBLRC investigators conduct epidemiologic, intervention and health service research in an effort to improve the health and welfare of the community it serves. Existing partnerships with the SBLRC include the University of California, San Diego, San Ysidro Health, Inc., Scripps Health, and Neighborhood Healthcare.

Housed within the SBLRC, the Hispanic Community Health Study/ Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) is a multi-center, interdisciplinary epidemiological study of Hispanic/Latino populations in the United States sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and other institutions, centers, and offices of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The goals of the HCHS/SOL study include further study of the prevalence and development of chronic disease in Hispanics/Latinos, the role of acculturation in health conditions, and the identification of factors that play protective or harmful roles in health among Hispanics/Latinos. This longitudinal cohort study is intended to address a wide variety of health conditions, including heart disease, stroke, asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease, and diabetes, among others. The target population recruited from the South Bay area of San Diego County includes over 4,000 persons of Hispanic/Latino heritage between the ages of 18-74.

This position is temporary part-time to serve as a backup and to cover on specific fixed days, including weekends. Under the direct and general supervision of the Project Director, Project Managers and Project Coordinator, the Phlebotomist/Clinical Laboratory Assistant I performs one or more standard laboratory procedures to prepare laboratory specimens, materials and equipment. The Phlebotomist/Clinical Laboratory Assistant collects, and processes biological specimens; adequately handles, contains, stores and disposes of the waste materials; both on site and on the field. Performs cleaning and de-contamination of laboratory surfaces, materials, and equipment. Assists in distribution of laboratory instruments and other materials to the assigned phlebotomy/laboratory processing areas. Prepares specimen for short and long-term storage, shipping and transportation, and makes arrangements for daily shipping pick up/drop off, as needed. Maintains laboratory supplies and equipment inventories, maintenance logs, supply orders, and assists with planning and scheduling of equipment maintenance. Adheres to safety regulations, OSHA bloodborne pathogens act, handling dry ice, collection and processing of biospecimens samples according to the study protocols. Performs phlebotomy functions, quality control activities, data entry, and record keeping. Personal transportation required for any offsite assignments. This position may be extended as needed.


Responsibilities
The Phlebotomist/Clinical Laboratory Assistant is responsible for but not limited to:

Laboratory Assistant/ Phlebotomist 75%

• Perform operations relevant to the activities for the collection of the study biospecimens samples; serve as phlebotomist, which entails drawing blood by skin punctures and venipuncture, to obtain samples using aseptic technique and in accordance with study procedures for research analysis.
• Follow strict research protocols for procedures and standards for the laboratory operations.
• Adhere to strict research study processing protocols to ensure samples are being collected and processed in a timely manner.
• Follow quality control procedures for compliance with federal, state and institutional standards.
• Ensure equipment is operating properly, perform quality control tasks, log quality control results, and assist with maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment.
• Assist in maintaining inventory and placing orders of laboratory materials and supplies. Adhere to OSHA guidelines, laboratory safety and protocols. Perform proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous waste materials.
• Perform general duties specific to data entry of forms.
• Must provide good customer service at all times.
• Follow human subject protection guidelines and maintain confidentiality of participants information.
• Other duties may include collecting assessments and biological specimens offsite such at the participants home.

Health Assessments/Interviews 10%

• Perform health assessments with strict adherence to the study research protocol to include studies informed consent and HIPPA administration, blood pressure, and anthropometry measurements; questionnaires administration of health related topics.
• Perform data collection and data entry using the studys data management systems.
• As needed, may be asked to support the main study and its ancillarys studies with other duties such as upload/download data acquired from devices, prepare mailings of materials, among others.
• May be asked to assist with additional studies taking place at the SBLRC.

Other Duties 5%

• Prepare study materials for assessments, procure supplies and deliver samples to facilities, as needed.
• Perform data verification for accuracy of data entry.
• Participate in research study meetings and trainings. Serve as back up for front desk duties, and other administrative assignments.
• Assist with organization and cleanliness of participants breakroom, examination rooms, front desk, common and lobby areas. Assist with cleaning and good care of equipment and study material.
• Performs other duties as assigned and needed.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications & Education

• High school diploma or GED equivalency
  6-12 months of related experience in a healthcare setting or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Valid certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT-1), as defined by the California Department of Health Services, which permits the incumbent to perform skin punctures and venipuncture.
• Bilingual in English & Spanish (able to read, write, and speak in both English and Spanish)

Preferred Qualificaitons & Special Skills

• Certification as Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) from an accredited program preferred
• Associates Degree in a relevant field of study (chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science) from a community college, vocational or technical school
• CPR or CPR/AED Certification
• Previous experience with difficult blood draw/veins
• Previous work in the field of community based research

A background check (including a criminal records check) and Livescan (fingerpring) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with SDSU Research Foundation
