Position Summary:
Interlochen Center for the Arts seeks applicants for the position of Instructor of Horn and Director of Brass Studies. The successful candidate will provide individual instruction to Arts Academy (IAA) and Arts Camp (IAC) horn students, coach sectionals for the IAA orchestra and wind symphony, participate in side-by-side rehearsals with the large ensembles, and actively recruit prospective students to the Academy and Camp. Leadership duties include directing the brass area for IAA and IAC and working collaboratively with the Director of Music, Associate Director of Music for Classical Studies, and Assistant Director of Music for Camp and Operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead Brass Area for Interlochen Arts Academy and Interlochen Arts Camp.
- Teach private lessons to Interlochen Arts Academy and Interlochen Arts Camp horn students.
- Coach Chamber Music and Brass Ensemble.
- Coach sectionals for Orchestra and Wind Symphony.
- When applicable, teach other courses in the Music Division as deemed appropriate by the Director of Music.
- Provide appropriate grading, attendance and evaluations of student progress as required by the music division.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and administration.
- Work to recruit students to maintain a full studio of horn students.
Education:
The successful candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree in music, master’s preferred.
Experience:
Required qualifications include evidence of excellence as a professional hornist with demonstrated experience in a broad range of performance styles and a minimum of two years of significant teaching experience at the college level and/or with high school students. Additionally, the successful candidate should have interest and experience in leadership and a broad knowledge and network of brass colleagues to consider for engagement as visiting artists.
Equipment Familiarity:
Comfortability with student learning management systems (Canvas) or willingness to learn about these systems.
Certifications, Licenses or Special Training:
- Must meet and maintain background screening requirements as detailed in policy 12.HR.01 Pre-Employment and Employee Background Checks.
- Valid driver’s license and driving record that meets the eligibility requirements of ICA’s insurance carrier (for all positions requiring driving).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Experience as a professional performer in solo, orchestral, chamber, and/or wind and brass quintet settings.
- Experience as a teacher at the college or high school level.
- An understanding of repertoire and audition preparation for students to enter college or conservatory in addition to the ability to match repertoire to developing hornists.
- Strong organizational skills and an ability to motivate teams.
- Fluency in the use of technology tools for communication and music education is highly valued.
- Demonstrate respect for cultural, ethnic, spiritual, and linguistic diversity and values including differences in personal goals, lifestyle choices and varying family backgrounds and histories
Physical Demands:
Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight (up to 35lbs); to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation, and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
