The New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development invites applications for a non-tenure track Music Assistant Professor position in Instrumental Performance (Woodwinds) to begin in September 2023. The appointed faculty member will join the Instrumental Performance program in the Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions (MPAP) and serve as Program Director for Woodwind Studies.  

Position Description: The successful applicant will oversee academic programs in Woodwind Studies (bachelor of music, master of music, artist diploma, doctorate of musical arts, PhD in Performance). The candidate should be able to successfully educate instrumental performance students in a wide range of historical and contemporary performance practices. This Faculty member will collaborate with program directors and administrators in Instrumental and Vocal Performance programs to coordinate chamber music, MPAP's two orchestras, concert band, musical theatre and opera productions, Broadway Orchestra, Contemporary Music Ensemble, Baroque Music Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, and Woodwind Summer Intensive. They will be encouraged to explore creative collaborations with non-performance programs (Composition, Music Technology, Music Education) and research centers (Music Audio Research Laboratory, Arts & Health @ NYU, Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy).

Responsibilities: Responsibilities include instructing undergraduate, masters, post-masters, and doctoral students, preparing them for performances, juried examinations, degree recitals, and professional opportunities; mentoring students in private lessons and chamber music coaching; and teaching courses in repertoire and performance practice. Administrative responsibilities relating to program direction require communications with faculty, students, and staff; strategic academic planning (curricular assessments and initiatives, recruitment and admissions, development and administration of the program budget); and supervision and recruitment of adjunct faculty. Full-time faculty members are expected to participate in the advancement of the Department and engage in faculty meetings, committees, and other forms of service; the Program Director's role is to ensure the academic integrity of Woodwind Studies and best address student needs.

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $70,000-110,000. Qualifications: A DMA degree or equivalent is required. To be considered for the Woodwind Studies position, candidates must have a distinguished record of teaching experience in an academic setting as well a record of professional performance. Applicants must have expertise in at least one of the following areas: chamber music, contemporary music, non-Western musical traditions and cultures, historical performance practices, leadership and entrepreneurship, interdisciplinary research.
