Responsibilities

The Pediatric Surgery Nurse Practitioner will care for pediatric trauma and pediatric general surgery service patients and their families. The pediatric surgery service will include care in the OR, PACU, acute care floor, emergency department, PICU, and NICU. The role of the pediatric surgery NP is to facilitate multi-disciplinary care through interaction with patients, housestaff, attendings and nurses. Patient care provided includes but not limited to, initiating appropriate consultations and referrals, postoperative patient evaluation and care, follow-up evaluations; and patient care planning, care education, and coordination of care. The PNP will also provide education to patients, family members, ICU members, and medical providers including medical students, residents, and fellow physicians. PNPs may participate in the design and implementation of research and/or quality improvement studies within the Pediatric Surgery Department.

The PNP role in the PICU/PCICU will include initial patient evaluation, ordering and interpretation of diagnostic test, initiation of appropriate treatments and medications using established protocols and practices, with appropriate oversight in accordance with state and hospital policy. In addition, the role will include: interaction with multidisciplinary team on ICU rounds; consultation with other providers; communication with patients and families; coordination of multidisciplinary care; admission/transfer/discharge planning; documentation of care. With appropriate credentials and privileges, the PNP may also perform invasive procedures (e.g., placement of central venous and arterial catheters, endotracheal intubation) within their defined scope of practice. PNPs may also serve as first responders for institutional rapid response teams, and provide education to patients, family members, ICU members, and medical providers including medical students, residents, and fellow physicians. PNPs may participate in the design and implementation of research and/or quality improvement studies within the PICU/PCICU.

To provide independent advanced level nurse practitioner clinical expertise to patients and their families on an on-going basis. This includes the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and specialty protocols as defined by standardized procedures for your specific department. This may include non-invasive or invasive procedures per approved standardized procedures as identified by the list available in the Medical Staff Office. Patient management decisions will be independent where appropriate after assessment of the patient and interdependent with consultation with an attending or other member of the team. NP's are expected to act as an expert resource person for health care providers including nurses, residents and other ancillary staff.

Provides direct patient care to a diversified patient population. Applies knowledge, experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.


Required Qualifications

• One (1) year or greater of PCICU, PICU, or Pediatric Surgery experience as a Nurse Practitioner
  
• Current AHA or UCDH issued CPR/BLS and PALS Certification
  
• Pediatric Acute Care National board certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center
  
• Graduation with a Master's degree, DNP or PhD in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing.
  
• Possession of valid California RN and Nurse Practitioner license without restrictions.
  
• Furnishing license.
  
• DEA within 3 months of hire.
  
• Judgement skills to effectively meet the needs of patients.
  
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  
• Self-direction and organizational skills to function in an independent role.
  
• Ability to cope with personal stress experienced by team members, other professionals, and caretakers.
  
• Ability to perform patient procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

• Three or more years of PCICU, PICU, or Pediatric Surgery NP experience highly desired
  

Special Requirements

• Inpatient Unit Based Per Diem employees shall meet the following minimum requirements: Work four 8-hour or 10-hour, or three 12-hour shifts per Patient Care Services' four week scheduling period, depending on the norm for the unit/area
  
• Ability to work flexible hours

• Evaluation must be a meets or exceeds
  
• Ability to meet minimum standards for hospital credentialing and billing standards as a billable provider
  
• This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
