POSITION SUMMARY:
The Division Chief of Internal Medicine leads the Division of Internal Medicine overseeing and leading the development, delivery, and assessment of the internal medicine curriculum. The Division Chief will develop a strong program of research and scholarly activity related to internal medicine. This position reports to the Chair of Primary Care.
Responsible for planning, developing, and evaluating the internal medicine curriculum including topics, courses, and methods of instruction that relate to internal medicine in years 1- 4 as assigned.
Participates in the instruction and supervision of medical students at all phases of training including didactics, small groups, clinical cases, clinical skill labs, clinical patient care, simulation training, procedure, and task training, and standardized patient encounters.
Supervises the development and implementation of the clinical curriculum in internal medicine for the third and fourth years.
Oversees student performance and assessment of third- and fourth-year medical students on clinical rotations in the Division of Internal Medicine.
Assists in the development of early clinical experience opportunities for students in years 1 and 2.
Supports Internal Medicine Clerkship Directors and faculty at Regional Clinical Sites.
Administrative:
Promotes, by example, a general atmosphere of respect for knowledge, thought, and inquiry in internal medicine within the University and in clinical settings.
Contributes to the planning, development, and evaluation of courses and academic programs within the University.
Constructs and manages the Divisional budget, allocating funds appropriately to efficiently utilize resources. Projects future Divisional budgetary needs (operational and personnel) and provides proposals with documentation during the budget planning cycle.
Motivates and develops Divisional course directors and faculty and provides regular feedback on performance.
Evaluates Divisional faculty and staff members according to their job descriptions and consistent with Divisional, medical school, and university standards.
Participates in the appointment and promotion process for faculty within the Division. Reviews all faculty appointment applications for the Division and provides recommendations to the appointment and promotion committee. Also, reviews all Division faculty for eligibility for reappointment.
Leads regular Divisional meetings.
Meets regularly with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs to provide updates on the internal medicine curriculum and Divisional projects, faculty, advisees, budgetary items, and needs.
Provides vision and leadership in Divisional strategic planning taking into consideration input by the Divisional faculty, the COM and University administration, outside stakeholders, and national benchmarks.
Participates in fundraising activities.
Clinical Practice:
Participates in clinical activity with designated clinical partners providing quality clinical care and meeting expectations for practice such as timely completion of medical records and measures for quality care as mutually agreed upon.
Participates in international and regional medical mission trips and programs including required travel, preparation, clinical care, and supervision.
Participates in regional community outreach programs to support the mission of the COM.
Maintains competency, licensure, and certification in the field including required continuing medical education hours. Keeps abreast of new developments, guidelines, and advancements in literature.
Service:
Serves on committees within the medical school as assigned.
Represents the COM by serving on state and national internal medicine committees.
Collaborates with other Divisions within the University to develop and implement interprofessional educational curriculum and clinical experiences.
Serves as the faculty mentor for the internal medicine student interest group.
Serves as a faculty advisor and provides mentorship for medical students pursuing internal medicine residency programs according to the established procedure for career planning and counseling.
Writes Division Chief letters for students applying to internal medicine residency.
Participates in interviewing applicants for potential admission to the COM.
Participates as an item writer for the USMLE and NBOME.
Participates in required COM faculty development.
Research:
Leads the Division research and scholarly activity strategic plan.
Participates in and supports faculty involvement with educational, clinical, or other internal medicine-related research and scholarly activity.
Develops a strong research-focused team dedicated to advancing the specialty of internal medicine.
Completes other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Division Chief is responsible for supervising the Division's faculty, clerkship directors, and assigned staff.

DO or MD degree required.
Must have an active and unrestricted state medical license and Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) license and be able to obtain unrestricted medical licensure in PA.
Board certification within the applicant's specialty is required by either the American Osteopathic Association or American Board of Medical Specialties.
Must have a previously demonstrated commitment to education with experience in teaching and academic leadership in a medical education setting preferred. Previous experience in graduate or undergraduate medical education is preferred.
Strong candidates will have significant experience with curriculum development, clinical skill education (clinical cases, entrustable professional activities, and milestones), medical student assessment, student career advising (including the residency match system), graduate medical education standards, and standardized patient and simulation education.
Must have excellent written, verbal, management, administrative, and organizational skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities.
Must be able to effectively interact with administration, faculty, staff, and students as well as build and unify teams.
Must have the ability and a track record of mentoring faculty and students.
Must be able and willing to practice internal medicine clinically and supervise Duquesne University medical students.
Must be supportive of the mission of the COM and be willing to collaborate with the University and COM leadership to achieve the mission and vision.
