PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Chair of Specialty Medicine mentors the specialty medicine division chiefs, overseeing the development, delivery, and assessment of the specialty medicine components of the clinical curriculum. The Chair will oversee a strong program of research and scholarly activity related to specialty medicine. The Chair will also serve as a division chief of their specialty within the department.
Reports to: Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Academic:
- Mentors and assists the division chiefs in the delivery of the specialty medicine curriculum including topics, courses, methods of instruction, and assessments in years 1- 4 as assigned.
- Mentors the specialty medicine division chiefs in the development and implementation of the specialty medicine curriculum for all four years.
- Mentors the specialty medicine division chiefs, in cooperation with biomedical chairs, to deliver a consistent and well-rounded curriculum, which aligns with national guidelines and allows for the assessment of biomedical and clinical outcomes.
- Mentors the specialty medicine division chiefs in the development of early clinical experience opportunities for students in years 1 and 2.
- Mentors the specialty medicine division chiefs in the development and implementation of interprofessional educational programs.
- Oversees and provides guidance for specialty medicine division chiefs in their supervision and mentorship of Clerkship Directors, faculty at the COM, and faculty at Regional Clinical Sites.
Administrative:
- Promotes a general atmosphere of respect for knowledge, thought, and inquiry within the University, the COM, and clinical settings.
- Promotes a general atmosphere of respect for students, faculty, staff, and patients within the University, the COM, and the community.
- Mentors the specialty medicine division chiefs in the planning, development, and evaluation of courses and academic programs within the University.
- Mentors the specialty medicine division chiefs in the management of the departmental budget, allocating funds appropriately to efficiently utilize resources.
- Motivates and provides feedback on the performance for the specialty medicine division chiefs.
- Mentors the specialty medicine division chiefs in the appointment and promotion process for faculty within each division.
- Meets regularly with the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs to provide updates on the specialty medicine department.
- Participates in fundraising activities.
Clinical Practice:
- Participates in clinical activity with designated clinical partners providing quality clinical care and meeting expectations for practice such as timely completion of medical records and measures for quality care as mutually agreed upon.
- Participates in international and regional medical mission trips and programs including required travel, preparation, clinical care, and supervision.
- Participates in regional community outreach programs to support the mission of the COM.
- Maintains competency, licensure, and certification in the field including required continuing medical education hours.
- Keeps abreast of new developments, guidelines, and advancements in literature.
Service:
- Serves on committees within the medical school and University as assigned.
- Represents the COM by serving on state and national specialty medicine committees.
- Serves as the faculty mentor for specialty medicine student interest groups as needed.
- Serves as a faculty advisor and provides mentorship for medical students including students pursuing specialty medicine residency programs according to the established procedure for career planning and counseling.
- Mentors and oversees division chiefs in the residency match mentoring, chair letter writing process in collaboration with division chiefs, and other key aspects of providing career guidance to medical students.
- Participates in interviewing applicants for potential admission to the COM.
- Participates in required COM faculty development.
Research:
- Oversees the division chiefs in their research and scholarly activity strategic plans.
- Encourages division chief leadership and faculty involvement with educational, clinical, or other specialty medicine-related research and scholarly activity.
- Oversees the division chiefs in the development of a strong research-focused team dedicated to advancing clinical medicine.
- Participates as an item writer for the USMLE and NBOME.
Supervisory:
- The Chair is responsible for supervising the Department's division chiefs and assigned staff.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
- MD or DO degree required.
- Must have an active and unrestricted state medical license and Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) license and be able to obtain unrestricted medical licensure in PA.
- Board certification is required within a specialty medicine specialty (OBGYN, Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine, Pathology, Surgery) by either the American Osteopathic Association or the American Board of Medical Specialties.
- Must have a previously demonstrated commitment to education with a minimum of five years of experience in teaching and academic leadership in a medical education setting. Previous experience in graduate or undergraduate medical education is preferred.
- Strong candidates will have significant experience with curriculum development, clinical skill education (clinical cases, entrustable professional activities, and milestones), medical student assessment, student career advising (including the residency match system), graduate medical education standards, and standardized patient and simulation education.
Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- Must have excellent written, verbal, management, administrative, and organizational skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities.
- Must be able to effectively interact with administration, faculty, staff, and students as well as build and unify teams.
- Must have the ability and a track record of mentoring faculty and students
- Must be able and willing to practice family medicine clinically and supervise Duquesne University medical students.
- Must be supportive of the mission of the COM and be willing to collaborate with the University and COM leadership to achieve the mission and vision.
