Job Description:
Under the direction of the Director of Housing and Residential Life, the Resident Director position is critical to the development and oversight of residential communities and the creation of a residential community conducive to the social and intellectual growth of our students. RDs are 12-month full-time live-in staff members who are responsible for the overall management of assigned residential areas including supervision of Resident Assistants, supporting Living Learning communities, and serving on departmental committees. RDs are responsible for creating a climate that supports student success, personal development, and high levels of resident engagement. RDs will also support summer assignments related to conferences and events, summer session housing, and new student orientation. Due to the nature of the position, RDs are expected to work outside of traditional business hours including participation in an on-call duty rotation. Responsibilities often extend into weekend and evening/early morning hours.
Essential Job Functions:
- Establish and maintain a healthy, actively engaged residential community by building relationships, supporting residents, and maintaining safety and security in residential areas.
- Recruit, train, supervise, coach, and evaluate Resident Assistants and other student staff who work directly with residents to implement programs and provide various levels of support within the residential communities.
- Develop lesson plans and learning strategies that further the learning goals of the residential curriculum/programming model and advise RAs on the development and implementation of learning strategies.
- Assist with housing operations as needed to include but not limited to: coordinating room selection processes, room assignments, room inspections, damage assessment and billing, check-in/check-out processes, occupancy records/reports, the distribution and maintenance of keys, and supervising the opening and closing of residential buildings throughout the year.
- Maintain office hours that provide adequate access to students and be available and participate in departmental and Division of Student Life initiatives as deemed appropriate
- Provide direct intervention and serve as a referral source for students experiencing interpersonal, developmental, or academic difficulties.
- Promote and actualize safety/security and risk management practices in assigned residential areas.
- Participate in professional staff on-call coverage and duty schedule; respond as needed to crisis and emergency situations and communicate with all necessary levels of staff during emergency situations
- Serve as a conduct officer by investigating and adjudicating minor and mid-level conduct issues under the supervision of the Director of Housing and Residential Life and the Dean of Students.
- Act as a liaison to various offices and departments, including but not limited to other Division of Student Life offices, Public Safety, Facilities, Dining Services, and academic departments.
- Provide collateral support to various areas and initiatives such as campus events and student activities, orientation, equity and retention programs, and learning assistance and academic support services.
- Oversee at least one major summer project including, but not limited to, Event Management with Summer Camps and Conferences and/or Summer Housing Operations.
Requirements:
Required Qualifications
- Knowledge of residence life operations, student affairs and higher education administration
- Demonstrated strong administrative, supervisory, and communication skills.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and effective organizational/planning skills
- Ability to maintain confidential information
- Ability to work flexible schedule with on-call duty rotation
- Ability to operate a personal computer and various software programs
- Ability to enforce safety policies, practices, procedures and requirements of the department
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse constituencies across campus
- Ability to remain calm, objective, and work under pressure while handling student and/or staff crisis situations
- Ability to balance representation of the department, Division of Student Life and Mills Commitment to providing culturally affirming programming to historically marginalized groups including students of color, including Black students, first generation college students, LGBTQIA+/transgender and gender nonconforming populations, students of all abilities and to the College's anti-racism goals.
Education and training
Bachelors required and Master's Degree preferred in College Student Development, Higher Education Administration or related field.
Physical, Mental, and Environmental Demands
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and monitor.
- Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make professional presentations.
- Speak and listen to others, both in person, by email, and over the telephone.
- Mobility to move from building to building on campus which requires walking up and down hills and stairs.
- May occasionally drive a golf cart and drive off campus for work related business.

Additional Information:
This is a full-time, an exempt position with an FTE of 1.0. Salary is commensurate with experience, and includes an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance, 403(b) retirement plan with match, as well as paid vacation, sick time off, and holidays.
