Position Summary:
Director for the newly constituted division representing Education, English, Health and Exercise Science, Military Science, Outdoor Adventure Leadership, Spanish and American Sign Language programs reports to the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs and works closely with the Associate Vice President for Curricular Management. The Director provides leadership for the development and implementation of the Division's mission within the scope of the larger University mission, and is responsible for the Division's effective operation.
The Division includes the following programs: Education, English, Health and Exercise Science, Military Science, Outdoor Adventure Leadership, Spanish and American Sign Language and is represented by approximately 1,000 graduate and undergraduate students, 40 ongoing faculty, 10 staff, and approximately 50 contingent faculty. The Division also houses the Community Preschool at SOU, the Center for Holistic Education and the Oregon Writing Project. The Director participates in setting the direction for the Division that reflects a wide range of academic programs and their contributions to the institution as well as allocating resources to support the goals of the Division and evaluating progress towards those goals. The Director provides leadership and oversight in securing resources, consults with the Program Chairs, faculty and University-wide administrative bodies. The Director actively engages in community relations and represents the Division to both internal and external constituents.
Participates in the Provost's Advisory Council (PAC).
This is a 1.0 FTE position; encouraged to teach one course per year.
The successful candidate will have the ability to effectively represent divisional programs to the external stakeholders and community partners including, but not limited to, professional licensure and program accreditation bodies.
Southern Oregon University is a public liberal arts institution of approximately 4,000 undergraduate and 500 graduate students. The surrounding area is known for cultural offerings such as the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Ashland International Film Festival, and the Britt Music Festival. Minimum Classification Qualifications:
- An earned PhD or appropriate terminal degree and academic credentials that qualify for appointment as Associate Professor or Professor within a program represented in the division.
- At least two years of experience as Department Chair or higher, or equivalent.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively represent divisional programs to the external stakeholders and community partners including, but not limited to, professional licensure and program accreditation bodies.
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least three years of experience as Department Chair or higher, or equivalent
- Familiar with enrollment management, enrollment practices and procedures.
- Tenure or Tenure eligible.

Scheduling and Curriculum
Managing and controlling all course sections and scheduling within the Division; monitoring enrollment patterns within the Division and making adjustments accordingly

Managing personnel issues for staff and faculty within the Division. Supervising, hiring and regular evaluation of faculty and staff, both temporary and ongoing. Per the Bylaws, evaluating faculty for sabbaticals, colleague evaluations, and/or promotion and tenure. Convening and consulting with Program Chairs
, Budget and Resources
Assisting with budget and resource management. Managing the ELU Bank within the Division. Initiating or responding to requests for budget information. Developing requests for resources regarding faculty release, hiring, equipment, facilities, etc. External fundraising to support divisional programs and initiatives.

Representing the Division to the public, both within and outside the institution; participating in fundraising/grant writing and in community relations/internship development as appropriate.
Assessment
Monitoring assessment and accreditation activities within the Division, including maintenance and updates of assessment data in Improve and completion of required reports to state agencies such as the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) and federal agencies.
