The Department of Computer Science (CS) is an integral part of Cornell Bowers CIS. It offers CS undergraduate majors in the Colleges of Arts & Sciences and Engineering, and offers three graduate degree programs; the Master of Engineering, Master of Computer Science, and Ph.D. The department is considered one of the top five Computer Science departments in the US, with world-class research covering all specializations.
What You Will Do:
Under the direction of the Director of Administration, this position will plan, organize, schedule, and coordinate numerous conferences, workshops, services, site visits, retreats, commencement ceremony, and other activities locally and nationally for the Computer Science department/faculty that include 45-50 faculty and senior academic staff. In addition, this position will serve as the coordinator for some of the Computer Science department's weekly seminars, student group events, fall colloquium series and other events and will coordinate with department faculty and staff on details and execution.
The Event Coordinator will:
- Plan and execute logistics for conferences, programs, and events; including meeting spaces, catering, lodging, marketing, public relations, mailings and registration, and distance learning technology.
- Assist in the design, creation, and publication of marketing materials, both in print and on prospective web site pages.
- Maintain various event listserves and serve as primary information source to event participants.
- Database administration, assisting with budget planning, and the preparation of various financial and expense reports.
- The incumbent will have a significant impact on high visibility programs within and beyond the department, and will work closely with administrators both within and external to the department so as to ensure programmatic needs are met pertaining to events in full compliance with University financial policies.
Work Arrangement:
This position is full-time and is located in Ithaca, New York. This position's primary work location will be on-campus with occasional ability for remote work.
What We Need:
- Associate's degree and 2 - 4 years of work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Exceptional customer service skills and proven experience in event planning.
- Hospitality and food handling experience is expected from this candidate.
- The Event Coordinator will set up various events and should have knowledge on exceptional food presentation styles.
- Must be a self-starter, working independently with demonstrated success working in team environment.
- Excellent oral/written communication, organizational and time management skills are essential.
- Must be detailed-oriented and demonstrate sound judgment. Technically adept using a variety of business and event management programs (Microsoft Office suite, and web content management, etc.).
- Experience in preparing and monitoring a budget. Familiarity with Cornell financial systems (ex: Concur, Pcards).
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects and handle confidential information.
- Ability to work well with a diverse group of people including but not limited to faculty, staff, and students, and outside stakeholders and the hospitality contacts.
What We Prefer:
- Bachelor's degree in related field with more than 4-6 years of experience.
- Previous experience with event planning or exposure to the hospitality industry preferred. Previous experience working with Faculty and Staff in an academic environment also preferred.
