Position Description
The University of California Observatories (UCO) [https://www.ucobservatories.org/] at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an AO Simulation Scientist. Under the supervision of the Laboratory for Adaptive Optics Director Dr. Philip Hinz, the scientist will support efforts in the development of the next generation of adaptive optics (AO) systems for UCO, with a focus on an adaptive secondary mirror (ASM) based AO system currently being considered for the W.M. Keck Observatory. The candidate will play a lead role in the development of AO simulation for this effort. Responsibilities will include: identifying suitable software frameworks to simulate performance of a wide-field AO system, carrying out tradeoff considerations for different AO concepts, and contributing to presentations and publications of identified solutions.
This position will require the selected candidate to employ strong interpersonal skills, work effectively in a team environment, and bring innovative ideas to practice. Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Ph.D. (or an equivalent foreign degree) in astronomy, physics, or a related field at the time of application plus five years postdoctoral scholar research experience in atmospheric propagation of light and adaptive optics performance simulation.
