THE OPPORTUNITY
The Regional Campus Dean is the leader of the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Regional Medical Campus at Duluth (https://med.umn.edu/about/duluth-campus) and oversees operations on the Duluth campus. The Duluth campus has been training rural family practice medical professionals for Minnesota since 1972 and is 2nd in the nation in training Native American physicians. This regional campus is located on the University of Minnesota Duluth undergraduate campus along the shore of Lake Superior. The Regional Campus Dean is responsible and accountable for the performance of the campus in fulfilling its site-specific missions: to be a leader in educating physicians with an emphasis on family medicine; to serve the health care needs of rural Minnesota and Native American communities; and remain consistent with the high standards of the University of Minnesota in discovering and disseminating knowledge through research. The Regional Campus Dean is also responsible for aligning the Duluth campus with the aims and expectations of the University of Minnesota Medical School and serves as the voice of the Duluth campus among the Medical School senior leadership. The Regional Campus Dean will have the opportunity to design and execute new efforts to achieve greater excellence in areas of emphasis, including strategic growth of research and the development of new partnerships with the regional community and with rural and Native American communities across greater Minnesota. The Regional Campus Dean is appointed by, reports to, and serves at the discretion of the Dean of the University of Minnesota Medical School (https://med.umn.edu/).
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Oversee and maintain integration of the Duluth campus-specific units and unit leadership. Associate Deans of the Duluth Campus report to the Regional Campus Dean, who defines their duties and responsibilities to the Duluth campus, to their counterparts on the Twin Cities campus, and to the Duluth departments. The Regional Campus Dean has the flexibility to reorganize the Assistant/Associate Dean Duluth campus leadership as needed.
In conjunction with the Medical School Dean, craft a vision for the continued excellence of the Duluth campus and growth in the research mission. Identify, strategize, and oversee major changes and improvements in infrastructure necessary to sustain and grow the work of the campus, and advance Duluth campus accomplishments over time, aligning efforts and funding sources with the statewide U of M Medical School.
In partnership with the two Duluth Department Heads that also report to the Dean of the Medical School:
•Ensure strategic growth of the research mission
•Prioritize internal and external financial investments for the Duluth campus and communicate decisions to faculty and staff in a transparent manner.
•Ensure compliance of the campus with LCME accreditation standards and ensure a compliant learning environment and a rigorous curriculum.
•Encourage and enhance the support for faculty, staff and student efforts in education, research, and scholarship.
•Advance efforts to increase diversity, equity and inclusion on the campus.
Support efforts of fund-raising for scholarships, fellowships, and research.
Connection and integration within the statewide University of Minnesota Medical School
•Serve as a member of the Medical School Dean’s Senior Leadership group and work to assure that activities of the Duluth campus are integrated into the Medical School mission, including maintenance of Medical School policies on the Duluth campus.
•Develop a plan, with Medical School administrative leadership, to align resources to achieve the Duluth regional campus mission.
•Support accreditation of regional medical education and seek support for medical student initiatives.
• Identify potential for enhanced alignment and connectivity of the Duluth campus to resources and programs of the U of M Medical School, and develop and execute methods to achieve specific identifiable alignments and integrations in accordance with LCME standards.
Interactions with the community
• Represent the Medical School Duluth campus in interactions with the College of Pharmacy Duluth Campus, and University of Minnesota – Duluth (UMD) colleges and relevant university graduate programs.
• Cultivate existing relationships and identify opportunities for new collaborations in research, and with community stakeholders, including tribal communities and health care providers, both regionally and across greater Minnesota.
• Continue to support the expansion and development of our alumni network.
• Facilitate expansion of clinical education and service, and advance interprofessional education for the Duluth Regional Campus; specifically, identify external entities and support to accomplish these expansions.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• MD/DO, PhD, or MD-PhD
• Record of teaching and working with health professionals and/or medical students and/or successfully conducting research.
• Experience or knowledge in primary care, rural health and Native American Health.
• Demonstrated ability to supervise multiple employees and manage teams.

• Demonstrated ability to articulate and navigate the potential changes in medical policy, healthcare politics, and healthcare delivery systems of the future, especially pertaining to rural and Native American health.
