Job Duties:
The Division of Pediatric Surgery at East Carolina University is seeking a Chief of Pediatric Surgery who will lead an established pediatric surgery program with three surgeons. This individual will also serve as the Surgeon in Chief of the Children's Hospital at Vidant Medical Center. The ideal candidate should have an interest in providing the full spectrum of emergent and elective pediatric surgical procedures and should be a nationally recognized leader in the field. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate an interest and ability to teach residents and medical students and should possess an interest in pursuing clinical research. Candidates with a track record of academic scholarly work in Pediatric Surgery at the level of Associate Professor or Professor are encouraged to apply. Rank and track will be determined according to the qualifications of the candidate.
The Chief of Pediatric Surgery will lead a division of 4 pediatric surgeons who are supported by dedicated advanced practitioners and nursing staff. The ideal candidate would support the development of clinical care pathways, keeping in trend with changing literature, and do so in a collaborative manner with subspecialists. Responsibilities will include maintaining a clinical practice in pediatric general and thoracic surgery, supporting education of surgical residents and medical students, and providing mentorship to early career faculty. As an academic and education leader they will lead the division in successful surgical resident training, evaluation of learners, and promotion as well as mentoring and sponsoring surgical residents interested in a career in pediatric surgery. The incumbent will be expected to nurture the existing collaborative and inclusive work culture. As a leader within the academic medical center, the division chief is expected to model innovative care through commitment to technical expertise and foster collaborations on a national level.

As Surgeon in Chief, the ideal candidate will have leadership experience in a complex environment, with the ability to influence change by demonstrating strong business acumen and creating genuine connections with colleagues. The Surgeon in Chief will have the following responsibilities:
· Assists in the ongoing quality and performance improvement plan for the delivery of surgical services in Maynard Children's Hospital and be interested in driving forward institutional application for ACS Children's Surgery Verification.
· Participates in the oversight of all pediatric clinical activities within the Surgery Service line.
· Is responsible for assisting in the integration of the surgery service line into the functions of the children's hospital, and the development of policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services.
· Assesses and recommends contracted services for needed patient care provided by the surgery service line.
· Serves as a recognized and respected leader within the Children's hospital.
· Supports the mission, vision, goals and values of the Vidant/ECU Health System and Maynard Children's Hospital.

Minimum Education/Experience:
MD from an appropriately accredited institution required and full, unrestricted license to practice medicine in NC.
Candidates must have completed a pediatric surgery fellowship and be board certified in general and pediatric surgery.

Organizational Unit Overview:
The Department of Surgery is a clinical department within the School of Medicine with the attendant responsibility for medical education and research. The Chair of the department is also the Chief of Surgical services for the hospital. The department includes 36 full-time faculty members in the sections of: transplant surgery, plastic surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical oncology, general and bariatric surgery, and trauma and acute care surgery. It also includes clinical and basic science research labs. The 70+ employees in the department support our clinical, education and research programs.
The Division of Pediatric Surgery has a tradition of holding leadership roles in resident and medical student education. The Pediatric Surgery program supports the education of a general surgery residency program which includes a research year in addition to five clinical years. The program has a longstanding tradition of successfully matching graduates in highly competitive fellowships, including in pediatric surgery. The division covers a single hospital and surgery center as well as satellite clinics. The division serves a population of 1.5 million in rural, eastern North Carolina and is continuing to grow in clinical and academic productivity.
Facilities: The James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital is a Children's Miracle Network hospital located at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC. The children's hospital includes 198 beds dedicated to the care of children (inpatient, newborn, Peds ED, and Peds Rehab). This bed compliment includes a 50-bed level IV NICU, one of the largest in the state of North Carolina, with an additional 21 bed transitional neonatal unit. Pediatric critical care faculty fully staff a 12 bed PICU as well as a sedation unit facilitating bedside minor procedures and endoscopy. The surgical services are supported by a robust and excellent pediatric anesthesiologist group. There is excellent collaboration with a full spectrum of medical and surgical subspecialty services. Surgical patients are also supported through their recovery with an inpatient rehabilitation program. The Department of Pediatrics is highly productive in research output and supports a neonatology fellowship program.

Vidant Medical Center, one of four academic medical centers in North Carolina, is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.
