The Dental Assistant, under the supervision of a licensed dentist, provides chair side assistance to dentists, dental or graduate students, interns and residents, dental hygienists, or dental technicians. May also perform clinical support duties such as appointment scheduling, billing, and maintaining patient records.

- Completion of an approved Dental Assistant training program OR
- One year of experience as a chair side Dental Assistant
- Certification by the Oregon State Board of Dentistry for Radiological Proficiency required for all positions
- Current valid Basic Life Support (BLS) card required (from approved vendor) required for all positions
- Must have worked as a dental assistant within the last 5 years
- General knowledge of the equipment, procedures and terminology used in dentistry
- Safely manipulate equipment, materials, and instruments
- Knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique, scrubbing and disinfecting
- General knowledge of standards, principles, and practices of radiology
- Basic knowledge of professional and legal standards required to work as a dental assistant; routine clerical functions (e.g., scheduling treatment)
- Skills in operation of xray equipment
- Skills in mixing amalgams, cements, and impression materials
- Skills in chair side assistance, including four-handed dentistry
- Knowledge of performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- Excellent customer service with answering questions for patients, students, and health care professionals
- Knowledge and experience in reading patient charts and extracting significant information
- Demonstrable record of reliable attendance, punctuality and proven successful performance at past and present employers
- Demonstrated exemplary tact, discretion, confidentiality and diplomacy
- Demonstrated ability to read, write and understand written and oral instructions
- Use of high speed hand pieces when assisting
- Appropriate PPE required. Exposure to x-ray radiation, nitrous oxide, chemicals, sharp instruments, and human tissue/fluids
- May require some travel for CEs or assignment to Dental School clinics
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
