Department Summary Campus Planning and Facilities Management (CPFM) is a vibrant department, which comprises five units, and approximately 270 employees: Facilities Services, Utilities & Energy, Campus Planning, Office of Sustainability, and Design & Construction. The units of CPFM strive to provide excellent customer service to the University of Oregon campus and operate with the highest professional standards, communicating and collaborating with customers to support the stewardship of the campus.
The Office of Design and Construction (D&C) works closely with Facilities personnel, faculty, and staff across campus to deliver successful, budget-conscious projects. Project sizes range from under $50,000 to over $100M. Project types include small departmental moves, interior renovations, new building construction, and many different types in between.
Position Summary This position provides Mechanical Engineering expertise for major capital projects, capital repair, deferred maintenance and in-house projects; designs mechanical and related systems and prepares cost estimates; and reviews design and construction documents to assure conformance to University of Oregon Design Standards. The position will advise and provide engineering support to campus units on capital, utility, repair, deferred maintenance, and energy projects, and all mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection (MEPF) related components and projects, provide information to assist in annual budget preparation and aid in project planning and prioritization.
The Project Mechanical Engineer will participate as part of a D&C commissioning team to ensure the project closeout process meets with project and campus customer expectations. They will assist in all phases of a project and provide support related to MEPF systems, energy analysis, design reviews, BIM, LEED, and updating campus Design Standards. The Project Mechanical Engineer will participate in studies targeting MEPF, utility and energy systems for planning and development of projects, and assess existing building systems in support of CPFM.
The scope of this position and its responsibilities requires excellent decision-making skills. Daily operations require decisiveness while maintaining strong customer-focused relationships. This position will assist in the analysis and assessment of systems performance for new building construction, as well as assigned major remodel or renovation projects, and may provide technical support for value engineering and cost analysis for buildings systems.
The duties for this position include: - Design of mechanical systems. - Prepare cost estimates for small capital projects. - Mechanical systems; determining the type and appropriate sizing of HVAC systems and components. - Identify existing systems to be upgraded or replaced. - Identify systems to be commissioned and to what level. - Review of project design documents. - Review operating efficiency of systems for new construction, and ensure appropriate level of metering and when existing meters should be replaced. - Conduct systems assessments and provide appropriate reports.
Interactions and contacts occur daily with the campus community in the course of performing work and responding to emergencies.
The position works as a member of a team while frequently performing tasks independently. Decisions may be made about the best method and materials necessary to perform a particular task. They may also include setting priorities, assessing customer needs and responding to those needs.
Work is reviewed regularly by the Assistant Director of Engineering and Utility Systems to ensure it is performed efficiently, safely, and meets both expectations and applicable requirements. A performance appraisal is conducted annually.
This position is governed by Facilities Services, State of Oregon, IBC, ASHRAE, ODOE and University laws, policies, regulations.
ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL This unit may provide essential services during times of emergencies and inclement weather. This position may be required to fulfill essential services and functions during these times.
Minimum Requirements • A Bachelor's degree in either Civil, Electrical, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management Engineering, or Energy Management Engineering; AND • Four years of engineering experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: • Hold a current Mechanical Engineering Professional Engineering License in Oregon, or ability to obtain Mechanical Engineering Professional Engineering License in Oregon within one year of hire.

Preferred Qualifications • LEED Accredited Professional. • Experience with Siemens or other DDC control system and utility metering and monitoring systems. • Experience working with district utility systems, to include steam and chilled water. • Experience with detailed system analysis. • Proficient in using AutoCAD. • Proficient in using AutoCAD MEP. • Proficient in using REVIT.
