Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
Hopkins Extreme Materials Intitute seeks a Research Assistant in the areas of processing and characterization of reactive materials. The goal of this position is to support and expand research into reactive materials that includes processing (e.g., milling, swaging, and sputter deposition), characterization (e.g. DTA, DSC, particle size analysis, SEM, and ignition and combustion studies), and analysis of experimental data. The candidate will be working closely within a larger group of experimentalists to understand, expand, and design the existing reactive materials research, and will be in charge of fabricating and characterizing materials independently, once trained. While this is a collaborative role, the candidate will be responsible for many aspects of the processing and characterization tasks, and data analysis, trouble shooting common processing issues, and interpreting the results in the context of existing reactive materials literature.
Note: The term of the appointment is not to exceed one year.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Ball milling and sputter deposition of composite powders
Assisting with swaging of powders into dense compacts
Characterizing powder and compact microstructures using SEM
Characterizing the onset and heats of reactions using DSC, DTA, and TGA
Quantifying ignition temperatures using hot wire experiments
Identifying combustion mechanisms, temperatures, and vapor species using high speed imaging and spectroscopy
Assisting with impact and fragmentation experiments
Performing data analysis using common software packages
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Bachelor's degree in related discipline
Some related experience
Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula
Bachelor's degree in Materials Science and Engineering
Some lab experience
Experience with materials processing methods
Ball milling, vapor deposition, mechanical processing, etc.
Experience with materials characterization and metallography preparation methods
Cutting, grinding, and polishing
Optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)
Calorimetry tools – DSC, DTA, TGA
Proficiency with machine shop operations and procedures
JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
