The Department of Animal Science's mission is to discover and disseminate new knowledge about the biology and management of domestic animals and to apply this knowledge to benefit society. Our department is devoted to undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, extension, and outreach.
Dr. Joseph McFadden's research includes work predominantly with dairy cattle; however, work with sheep and in vitro cell culture systems also exists. The laboratory team is a diverse group of researchers, including Postdoctoral Associates, graduate students, and undergraduates.
What You Will Do
We are seeking a talented individual to support research in dairy cattle nutrition and biology. Work under the direction of a Principal Investigator (PI) with the research mission to improve dairy cattle health and milk production efficiency. You will assist the PI in the implementation of research experiments. You will monitor laboratory compliance for safety regulations and provide general laboratory and equipment maintenance. Specific duties include:
Conducting and assisting in experiments with dairy cattle.
Conducting wet-lab procedures.
Reviewing research literature, selecting, and recommending to supervisor collected research data or information per project requirements.
Keeping detailed, accurate records, procedures, and results of experimental activities and data both in notebook and computerized formats.
Assisting in basic training of laboratory safety and procedures for new trainees.
Independently evaluating existing and developing new laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques; making recommendations for improvements.
This position is full-time (39 hours/week) and will be located in Ithaca, New York. This is a one-year appointment with possible extension depending on funding and performance.
What We Need
We are looking for an individual that enjoys research regarding the health of dairy cattle. Someone who can monitor safety compliance and excels at building relationships with multiple stakeholders. We need someone that has strong customer service skills with a focus on excellence. Additionally, we need someone who has:
Associate's degree in animal science or related field and 2+ years of research and/or lab management experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Excellent computer skills, including word processing, excel, and data entry.
Ability to pay attention to detail and maintain high data quality standards.
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work quickly and effectively while prioritizing workload.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to efficiently manage laboratory procedures and facilitate research protocols.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with research team and supervisor.
Ability to work independently and take initiative.
Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and guidelines.
Ability to solve problems and improve research protocols.
Ability to stay up to date with new research techniques and evolving projects.
Experience in the collection of data and preparation of summaries and final reports.
Ability to keep the equipment, materials, and lab organized.
Ability to contribute to an inclusive, high-quality, and respectful work environment.
Exercise sound and ethical judgment.
Demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
Demonstrated ability to work with and care for large animals (i.e., livestock).
Must be able to work irregular hours occasionally.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Bachelor's degree in animal science, biology, nutritional science, or related field
Experience handling live animals, preferably dairy cattle.
Experience and understanding of basic concepts of biochemical, molecular, and cellular biology.
Experience with collecting and handling blood and tissue samples.
Experience performing basic wet-chemistry techniques in the lab.
Experience developing protocols and bench-top methods.
