The Application Developer is part of the IT Development & Operations team within the Information Technology Department at Vanderbilt University. The Application Developer is a key individual contributor responsible for the implementation of enterprise applications, APIs, and integrations with internal and external systems using departmental standards and industry best practices. The position develops and modifies software under occasional guidance and designs, codes, performs benchmark testing, debugging and documentation of programs. The Application Developer implements small projects or components of large projects. This position requires the ability to solve medium to complex problems.
The IT Development & Operations team creates, configures, manages, and supports software supporting various areas within Vanderbilt University including Academic Affairs, Division of Administration, Vanderbilt University Information Technology and others.
Duties and Responsibilities
Demonstrates proficiency of programming and other development tasks independently and without support from others for moderate to difficult applications.
Able to successfully debug complex routines.
Has used structured code to produce modules of straightforward logic.
Applications Development Standards and Procedures:
Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate knowledge of applications development standards and procedures in practical applications of moderate difficulty.
Is attentive to existing applications development standards and procedures, and may recommend improvements to existing applications development standards and procedures within the work area.
Applications System Analysis:
Demonstrates the ability to conduct systems analysis tasks in a team environment or independently to build or enhance a simple system.
Decomposes complex issues into meaningful and manageable parts.
Has conducted the basic phases of systems analysis including analyzing problem areas, preparing systems requirements definitions, and evaluating systems alternatives.
Able to uncover all information relevant and useful for a project.
In terms of structured systems analysis, if applicable, has used techniques such as data flow diagrams, decision tables and/or structured English in describing the components of a system.
Applications System Design:
Has knowledge of or light exposure to basic systems design tasks such as designing system architecture and flow, preparing functional design and file specifications, designing new documents, screens and reports, preparing program requirements and specifications, and preparing implementation and testing plans.
Worked with transaction, object oriented, graphical user interface and other concepts and architectures.
In terms of structured systems design, if applicable, has had classroom training or independent study in principles of structured design.
Understands concepts such as cohesion, coupling, data flow graphics, etc.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary .
At least two years of related experience is necessary .
At least two years of programming experience with Java is necessary .
Proficiency with Object-Oriented design is necessary .
At least one year of experience with SQL is necessary .
At least one year of experience with the Spring Framework is preferred.
