RESEARCH ENGINEER , Mechanical Engineering , to work in the Global Engineering and Research (GEAR) Lab which focuses on advancing research, technology, and knowledge about high-performance, low-cost prosthetic limbs. Will be responsible for designing a prosthetic foot using GEAR Lab's lower leg trajectory error (LLTE) design framework; build, test, and refine an LLTE mechanical testing apparatus (MTA); write academic papers about the aforementioned projects; test many commercially available prosthetic feet using the LLTE MTA and compare how their LLTE values match prior clinical performance measurements; contribute to field pilots and clinical testing; contribute to preparation of proposals for new funding opportunities; edit academic publications and provide feedback to other lab members; provide mentorship for younger students; and provide design and fabrication consultation and assistance to other projects.
Job Requirements REQUIRED : advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in mechanical engineering or a related field; experience with hands-on engineering and fabrication of prototypes and devices; comfort and proficiency with various machining and prototyping process including milling, turning, 3D printing, laser cutting, welding, and woodworking; experience designing load-bearing and compliant structures, ideally made from carbon fiber; experience designing, fabricating, and controlling electromechanical systems; experience writing technical proposals and technical academic papers; and ability to work in a team-oriented environment and to mentor and provide feedback and guidance to students; Job #19897
Must be willing to work some nights and weekends and to travel domestically and internationally.
This is a one-year position with the possibility for renewal based on performance and available funding.
