The Clinical Lab Scientist Specialist (CLS Specialist) performs all routine and special automated hematology testing including complete blood cell counts, reticulocyte indices and leukocyte differentials, coagulation tests, urinalysis, body fluid cell counts and blood gas testing. Performs manual hematology test methods including manual leukocyte differentials, peripheral blood smear slide screens, erythrocyte sedimentation rates, hemocytometer fluid cell counts and differentials, microscopic review of urine sediment, phase contrast microscopy for crystal identification, urine pregnancy testing, and other manual test methods. The CLS Specialist is responsible for the proper operation of instruments, including maintenance, troubleshooting, quality control and laboratory information system (LIS) functions. In addition, the CLS Specialist will have assigned area(s) of responsibility for technical, administrative and quality activities. The specialist participates in teaching, training and education of other CLS personnel, new hires, CLS students and laboratory medicine residents. Attends and participates in scheduled and ad hoc Hematology Division Operations Meetings. Participates in and prepares reports for monthly Hematology Division Quality Reporting Meetings. Attends and participates in monthly Hematology Division Leadership Forum. Must be able to work independently, under pressure: recognize problems, objectively identify causes and determine appropriate solutions; while maintaining a high level of organization, accuracy and efficiency. Collaborates on projects as needed. Follow all health and safety precautions and procedures as mandated by regulatory agencies and complies with all UC, Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG), and Clinical Laboratory policies. Performs all duties in a manner that denotes the team concept and reflects the UCSF and ZSFG mission, vision and values.
