The Proteome Exploration Lab (PEL; http://pel.caltech.edu) at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena is seeking an experienced Research Associate to provide support to proteomics- and metabolomics-based mass spectrometry projects. The successful candidate will be an integral member of an interdisciplinary team and will work closely with the PEL group and other research groups focusing on diverse biological projects. Interested individuals should demonstrate advanced technical skills in small volume biological sample handling, bench experimentation, and a willingness to learn advanced techniques in mass spectrometry analysis. Candidates should be eager to work cooperatively within a fast-paced team environment and enjoy critical thinking and creative problem solving.
Prepares biological samples for mass spectrometry analysis, including protein extraction, cleanup, digestion, and peptide separation.
Applies scientific knowledge with broad laboratory skills to execute complex bench experiments using a variety of molecular biology, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, and general laboratory techniques as directed.
Plans experimental details required for execution of assigned work, with little oversight.
Organizes and manages moderately complex projects.
Maintains accurate and detailed records of experimental work.
Operates and maintains laboratory equipment and helps troubleshoot and solve equipment issues.
Coordinates with researchers and/or students on experimental design and implementation to meet research objectives.
Coordinates and tracks purchases, deliveries, and restocking of laboratory supplies, parts, and equipment, and maintains reagent database.
Presents experimental design, results, and data analysis at group meetings as directed.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
BS in molecular sciences, life sciences or related field with 2+ years related work experience handling biological samples OR a MS/PhD in molecular sciences, life sciences or related field with experience handling biological samples.
Excellent technical bench skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to follow detailed protocols.
Ability to work cooperatively under direct supervision.
Ability to work independently while managing and prioritizing multiple projects.
Experience with proteomics and/or metabolomics sample preparation for mass spectrometry.
Experience with H/UPLC and mass spectrometry (Thermo Orbitrap and LTQFT systems).
