Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking a Law School Career Counseling Officer. Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Career Development, the Assistant Director for Career Development, including but not limited to, the following:
Plays a key role in career counseling and professional development assistance to law students and graduates, with particular emphasis on judicial clerkship, public interest and diversity opportunities.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience;
A minimum of 5 years in related position within career services, HR recruitment, career coaching/advising, talent development, or similar.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proven ability to foster cooperative environments and to work in a collegial fashion with individuals of diverse backgrounds and experience. In-depth knowledge of legal environments and legal practice experience essential.
Understanding of the complex career development issues affecting law students and the legal profession and be able to provide sound advice and counsel to address those issues.
Identify and analyze trends in the legal profession and develop and implement best practices for increasing job prospects for students and alumni.
Regular exercise of independent judgement and an ability to work with minimal supervision under broadly defined policies and practices.
Computer literacy, an understanding and appreciation of career services database software and on-line resources, and the willingness to respond to the needs of students and employers in an increasingly technologically-oriented society are also required.
Exemplary administrative, analytical, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, as well as excellent oral and written proficiency required. Some travel and regular evening hours required.
J.D. strongly preferred;
Experience in a law school environment strongly preferred;
A minimum of four years law practice experience strongly preferred.
